I would also check the fuel tank strainer. Lots of crud can build up in a diesel tank.

When I got my first benz it would run out of fuel with about an eighth of a tank according to the gauge. What was happening was that the fuel tank screen, which is about 2.5 inches high or so, was only open at the top. The side were coated in a thick black goo. Once I replaced the strainer I was able to run down into reserve without petering out. If there are black particles in your prefilter I'd be willing to bet you're having a similar issue. Get the black rubber bosch primer pump, best money I've spent so far.

Haha....yeah, I was thinking that too. I saw it was resurrected the other day. I suppose it's a helpful bump for other newcomers though (well, those oblivious to the search function anyway).
