I think it goes back to men liking to try to handle tough things.

Kind of like having a woman/wife that you know that you shouldn't probably be able to keep or should have never gotten in the first place, but you stick with what you are doing and she seems to be content and stay with you. Kind of like when you get that big, old, Mercedes running right and you have to wonder every now and then if it is going to abandon you and drop you like a rock, but that Mercedes Diesel just keep on trucking. Now the 603 is more like a young girl, who isn't going to tolerate too much and will leave you abandoned just like that, thus you have to always keep a backup.

Knock on wood neither my cars have ever left me stranded. The SDL has always started first time every time. SD likes to be pluged in but other then that she has always started as well.

These things really are pretty reliable, something pretty major has to break to strand you.

I like my Benz cause it diesel and sweeter than a Rabbit. My friends that have diesel Rabbits (3 of them) are all pretty jealous. One of them that turboed his says "my car is staring to be more and more like a regular (gas) car! I say "mine drives just like a regular car." It makes me wonder if the waste gate is stuck or something...

Yes there is a bit of an MB diesel fraternity. They are a bit unusual and given their age, you can assume the other driver is a bit of an MB nut and you're often right. Here in Seattle I'd say it goes a bit further with the biodiesel craze. Not only do I check out other older MBs to see if they're diesel, but I look for the telltale biodiesel bumper sticker. I was cruising down I-5 in my '85 300TD the other day when I saw another TD up ahead, it was a bit more beat down and I think a non-turbo, so I pulled up alongside to give the "peace" V and they were already checking me out. After a moment I stepped on it and pulled away.

Yesterday a saw a very old MB sedan, which I figured was a "heckflosse" model and I asked the woman getting out of it "what year". Turned out to be a '67 200D. We had a little chat.

Love the comforting diesel clatter.

being

mechanically inclined and electrically challanged, a diesel is a perfect fit for me. love them.

course superior mileage and endurance are an attraction too.

Tom,

Very nicely said, but it only applies to diesels of yesteryears, new ones are getting as electronically complex as the old ones.

Gurkha:

That the only type I have any experience with. A modern, computer
run Mercedes benz would be as appropriate for me as dating Paris Hilton...
While it would be fun to look under the bonnet, the bill would kill me.

I drove the 300SD from Sacramento to Coeur d'Alene. I drove I5 most of the way. I had a car full of friends. I saw a total of 3 old MB diesels on the road (I thought I'd see more), 2 were kind junky... like missing finders... you can tell that the diesel engine just wouldn't stop running so people keep driving them. The other car I saw was a beautiful 300D I slowed down and passed the guy, looked at him and waved. My friends thought I was crazy, but the guy driving the 300D gave a big wave back. I told me friends, "well I may be crazy but I'm not alone"

I've done a few road trips, always with a car load of friends; normally I take my 83 Toyota Tercel, because it is so simple, I have rebuilt parts of the car in parking lots. But the Tercel has had a bad throw out bearing for a few months, and I haven't changed it and didn't trust it on the road trip. So I took the 300SD. I was afraid if there was a problem that I would be out allot of money. because as you all know, the parts for these cars are out there, but at a price, and when you don't have time to search and are in a pinch you could easily over pay for every part just to get the car back on the road. But luckily the trip went flawless. The car ran better then ever expected, passing cars while fully loaded, like it was not big deal. The trip was great. I can't see myself ever getting rid of the 300SD. She loves me to much for something like that.

I have some of the best conversations with stragers filling up their Mercedes Diesels at truck stops.

You know what? I think these are very good reasons. Quite a good list actually.....
Nice.
I'm not sure if I agree with "E" though. And I don't get "F".

Only reasons I like Mercedes diesel is:
- 400+ lb/ft torque
- 300+ hp
- 30++ mpg

all that comes in one package

typical Finn-spec diesel:
