Bizarre question
I'm driving through a parking lot yesterday, apparently I run over a freshly discarded burning cigarette butt. Somehow, this thing ends up somewhere in my car ventilation, kicked up by the tire or something, because I could smell it burning like it was an ashtray about 3 inches from my nose. And then I swear I could see the smoke coming out the vents. Now I've got pretty much a continuous odor of stale cigarette smoke in my beautiful clean non-smokers car. I'm pissed. How and where do I look for this thing and get rid of it??
thx The car is a 1999 W210 chassis E300 DT. |

This does not seem possible. If you ran over it, the inner fenders would
catch it, right? For the meanwhile, try Ozone spray to mask odor. Should go away soon. Tom |

I'd check the bonnet vents tbh, its more likely that someone threw a cigarette down there.
Can't see how it would get flicked up by the tyres, nowhere for it to go? |

You might also consider replacing the cabin air filters since the activated charcoal filter is apparently designed to neutralize odors from outside.

Well, several ounces of Febreeze later and some good all-windows-down drive time seemed to help significantly. (You should have seen the looks that got in 15 degree weather here in Portsmouth NH). Thanks all. I know, I didn't see how it's possible either. Maybe some dude flicked the thing and it landed in my vents from the topside? I never found it, but it's slowly improving. Probably a good thing this happened as it caused me to take a peek under the car and I noticed the plastic housing over the bottom of the engine was cracked and needs to be replaced.

No way a tire can kick it up into the air system. Must have been planted there by a gas car driver.

Seriously, get someone else to check it. Someone who isn't biased like you would be. This is where the wife-o-meter comes in. She is so unknowing about cars, I use her to test new mods. If I told her I changed the tires, I'd ask her how it feels. She gives an honest answer since she doesn't know what affects what.
