ok. i've found the rack dampener bolt i think. its that one sticking out of the back of the fuel pump almost touching the oil filter housing. mine needs to be adjusted because i'm having the rough idle when hot problem. how the heck do you access the bolt? i tried a wrench but once you get it on there, there is no room to move. what kind of tool should i be using to do this?

I used a Craftsman 12mm combination wrench on the bolt and a 14mm on the lock nut. Assuming you have a w123 turbodiesel, there should be plenty of room in there.

yep. its an '84 300D turbo. when i finally got the wrench on the bolt, there was no room to twist it 'up'. i need to look at it again.

Rack dampener adjustment
Be careful when adjusting this bolt. Loosen the lock nut and only turn the bolt in 1/4 turn in at a time. Tighten the lock nut back up, give the engine gas and let off the throttle, the point where the engine doesn't stumble when it returns to idle speed is where you leave the bolt. Turning it too far in will cause the stumble. Of course, depending on mileage, you may just want to get a whole new bolt. The spring inside them wears down over time.

update
i managed to work the bolt loose. i actually took it out and looked at it. i saw where the small tip on the end is spring loaded and i mashed it down to see if there was still "springyness". it seemed ok but i don't have anything to compare to. i put it back in, made several adjustments per instructions i found here. i could tell no change in the idle whatsoever. it's still a shaker! i would have tried to buy a new rack dampener but the dealership parts shop is closed weekends. do you think the dampener is worn out? i could try the redline thing or i also saw performance products has some stuff you run through the injectors to clean them out. worth a try?

Engine shake
How are your motor mounts? It also couldn't hurt to run some Red Line Diesel Catalyst in the tank either. I prefer the Red Line products very much over Lubro Moly. In my old 240D I used to have an injector which would "ping" on acceleration. I poured a bottle of Red Line in the tank at my next fillup and it was gone. You should use one full bottle your first time, pour it in before pumping the fuel, that way it will get mixed around when you pump the fuel in. After you run that tank down, you only need a couple of ounces in each tankfull after that. So a bottle should last you 5 or 6 fillups. Good luck!

motor mounts
motor mounts were installed this past december. you should see the engine shaking inside there! it looks like its sitting on a trampoline.

diesel additives
i think i went to 5 places today searching for both redline diesel catalyst and diesel purge. do you have to buy these products online or is there a particular place i should look? i went to autozone, pep boys, wal-mart, napa, and o'reilly. i just didn't think it would be so difficult!

i'm at a loss. i bought the new "gold" stŸck at the mercedes dealer today. i also found some redline diesel catalyst at a different pep boys.
on my lunch break i installed the new stŸck (rack dampener thingey). i put it in like 3 or 4 different positions and could never notice a difference in the idle. am i doing something wrong? this evening i pored in a bottle of the redline then gased up and drove about 15 miles. i still did not notice a difference in the idle. suggestions? |

From personal experience, you should install the rack dampener bolt until you just feel it touch the rack inside. Run the car, and rev the engine if you sense a dead spot at the end, where the idle drops off, as Aaron said, turn it in a 1/4 turn, and rev the engine again. Do this until you don't have a dead spot at the end of the revving.
Then, bring your wrenches with you and while you are driving, let off the gas and coast to a stop. If the engine sounds like it is not idling, adjust the bolt some more. This is from my own experience of course. I had the same experience originally and thought it was strange that I did not notice any difference. |

ok, i think i'm almost to final give stage. i pulled out the screw. twisted the bolt all the way almost to the tip and figured i'd start from the outside in. i must have made at least 12-13 1/4 turn adjustments and it did not affect the idle at all. the engine jiggled back and forth like always! that screw is NOT easy to adjust. the oil cool hose is in the way and if you are lucky enough to get a wrench on the screw, then 8 out of 10 times you don't have enough room to turn it. adjustments are easier if you can twist it with your fingers but thats not always possible.
maybe i'm barking up the wrong idle tree? |

Stuck means piece
If you have a rough idle due to other problems the rack dampner bolt will not smooth it out. it's only function is to remove ocilations in the fuel rack at idle that would cause engine rocking. Try isolating a weak or rough cylinder by losening each injector line in turn while the engine is running. If one make less of a drop in rpm or the engine gets no rougher you've narrowed it to one cylinder. double check valve adjustment (check only when cold warm specs are very inaccurate).Try swapping out the injector. Run some Lubro Moly diesel purge straight from the can.(just filling the filter rapidly returns it to the tank) Bob D. |

thanks for the input. when i was looking for the redline earlier this week i was also looking for the diesel purge. i never found it at any of the 7 auto parts places i checked. i ended up ordering some today from ************************ and it will take a week to get here! if anybody in the austin texas area knows of a place to buy that stuff, let me know.

thanks for all the suggestions. i think i've tried everything within my abilities to try and diagnosis it. i just got through running the diesel purge through there. it sounded smoother when i first got it started up. i drove around a little, washed it, took it on the freeway, but it still shook when i came to the light. i played with the dampener some more but to no avail. i'll have to turn it over to a professional whenever i can afford it. the diesel purge was a good idea though. i could really tell a difference in engine sound after it was done.

I was looking at my rack dampener bolt today and it looks like the bolt is up flush with the lock nut. I'm not sure of the geometry but I think the bolt is all the way in ? Will a new bolt's head be a distance from the lock nut ? My engine idles fairly smooth for now but I have a new rack dampener bolt and I'm thinking I'll need to put it in one of these days.
