I did leave the shocks off. Seems like a totally acceptable amount of shudder at shut down. Also, the mounts are brand new, AND I have an extra set. So there.

The worst part of the job is reaching the little nuts on the top and bottom holding them in and all the oil and slime thats probably on them, otherwise the objective isn't difficult. Overall I'd estimate it at a 2-3 hour job tops. The task to accomplish is simple, its just hard to get at them very easily, especially with large hands (like I have....) it can be a pain. Due to their cost ($40+ apiece), I'll probably never change mine. The time I took them off was when I changed my motor mounts, which are a necessary replacement every few years.
...A 45 minute job to change both shocks. Helps to have some extension bars for the ratchet and socket. On the right side, it's a little hard to get to without removing the aircleaner, but can be done if you use a universal joint on the extension. When removing the lower attachment for the shock, you have to use a 7 mm wrench to hold the shaft of the shock so it does not rotate. the other bolts are 10 mm.

I don't have engine shocks on mine at all. Running seems fairly smooth, and a little shudder on turn-off. I also put new engine mounts on when we did the swap from 4 cyl to 5 cyl, I guess we'll see if they fatigue faster than normal. Of course I don't have a cherry 300D to compare it to, so I guess it's all relative.

I have comparison of 1980 240D -vs- 1980 300D

I now have the following M-B(s) under my wing:
1980 240D without engine shocks, and
1980 300D with engine shocks.

My observation is that the 240D runs much rougher than the 300D...
and trying to think logically I concluded it was because the 240D had
1 less cylinder and NO shocks.

After reading this old thread, now I'm now sure !

Q-Should I make the effort to retrofit the 240D with engine shocks or not as it does not have the necessary mounts in place?

It just dawned on me... take them off !

Since writing my response on this thread, it dawned me that all I need to do is temporarly remove the engine shocks from the 300D and see it if remains as stable and quite... but it'll have to wait until many other things have been addressed.

personally i dont believe the benz engineers put them on there for their looks. they are to control the movement of the engine, and without them you will find (i beleive) that your hoses and wires (which are designed with the shocks in mind) will vibrate in two sooner.

never mind the shaking.

my $.02.
