engine shocks loose as a goose...is this normal?

while looking for that washer i dropped down in the engine compartment, i discovered that both engine shocks are loose. by loose, i mean they can be spun around freely. also, the nuts at the top and bottom move back and forth easily, although they themselves don't spin. is this normal?

You shouldn't be able to move them at all. Sounds like the shock mounts are broken. Try pushing down on the shocks and see if there is any resistance. If there is you may not need to replace the shocks, but you definetly need to replace the mounts.
Engine Shock Mount at Fastlane

The one on the driverside is easy. I don't know about the one on the passenger side, I have only replaced the driverside one on my 300TD

no, one mount is bonded rubber the other is steel...your bonded mount has delaminated...and is now worthless. the shock should not rotate and should have significant resistance to compression and extension if removed from the car.

I don't think ANY looseness under the hood can be a good thing!

It's the shock mount. I just got one delivered to me today for my SD. Those engine shocks and mounts are some of the most overpriced parts I've seen. Shocks are $40 - $50 each?! Mounts are $30 and $50 with bushings.

That's ~$100 for each frigg'n side!!!!!
