The pdf you linked to http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/attachments/diesel-discussion/133661d1449767270-w126-1983-300sd-rear-shock-spring-r-r-diy-spring-rear-123-32-230.pdf

shows a spring compressor (p/n 115 589 00 31 00) which looks very different than the compressor for the front springs, which has round disks. Do you know if the front spring compressor also work on the rear springs?

(p/n 115 589 00 31 00) does not turn up much in searches. I am trying to decide if I DIY or pay a shop to do it. If DIY, I'd buy a spring compressor to make the job go faster and safer.

Steve I have removed rear springs on my 85 300D w/o using a Spring Compressor.
Once you remove the Shock, and unbolt the calipers and hang them up to the swap bar.
Place a jack under the Differential.
Remove the 4 133mm bolt for the Diff mount.
Then lower the Diff and the springs will Fall out.

The front springs? Yeah, you will definitely need the Compressor.

Charlie, That does not sound too bad. I'll jack up the rear, crawl under and take a look. What about replacing the springs? Is it just a reverse of the procedure? Have you done it by that way?

Replacing them is easy. I did this when I had the whole Sub Frame out to replace the Bushings.

As I mentioned above, remove the Calipers and hang them on the Sway Bar.
This is so you do not stretch the Brake Hose when you lower the Differential.
You may have to remove the one 17mm bolt on each side of the Sway bar where it bolts to the links.
Rotate the bar up so the Calipers don`t fall off. I used 2 6" bungees to loop around the bar to hold the calipers on.
A piece of wire will do also.

When you replace the Springs, make sure the rubber pads are on the top and place them up in the hole.
Then set the lower ends in the Training Arms.
Slowly lift the Floor Jack to raise the Differential while checking both springs as they are getting seated.

Put in the 4 13mm bolts for the Diff mount.

After that it is just a matter of hooking everything back up.

The first time I realized you do not need a compressor for the rears, I was at a PNP to remove a 2:47 Diff from a W126 380SE.
As I lowered the Diff, the springs just fell out. scared the crap out of me.
I thought they were under compression like the fronts, but are not.

Someone had removed the rear shocks already, and I didn`t notice it.
At that time I was still learning about these cars.....well I still am..... Iam now just a 1/2 a$$ expert. LOL
