I've had a cubie of brand new sams clear fry oil (100% Soy) on my porch for about 1.5 months, sitting through the cold etc....I pulled it out of the box today and it had a whole bunch of whiteish crud settled at the bottom! Is that lard settling or something? it was about 40degs at the time I checked it.....I don't want to dump this stuff into the tank if it has all that crud in it....I thought you could just mix in some RUG and run the stuff....I'll take a pic of it later if it still looks that way, its about 63 outside now....so it may have blended back in...but still!

Is the oil partially hydrogenated? I guess it was liquid to 15 degrees...

Here's some pics of my oil cubie from sams I just took, the oil was "cool" probably about 50ish degrees, its almost 70 outside today though!!

Anywho, any opinions on this stuff, it sat through temps as cold as 15 degrees or so, and I just now looked at it without disturbing it, and this is what I saw:

What do I do about this? Would it be a problem?

You should try posting these on the infopop forum. Is there an ingredients list on the package? That should say if it is hydrogenated or not.

Would that be a problem?

PAwoSD asked if it would be a problem to dump that cubie of soy fry oil in his tank. Yes, I think it would make for a big problem. However, I think if you would carefully pour off , (would be better to syphon) the top 3/4's off that cubie and burn just the very liquid part. Do that while the spring coolness is in the air and dump the part that you don't burn together with other cubies that have the oil congealing. Then when it gets good and warm this summer and you don't have any congealing of the oil, run them through the SD. Or just set them aside and save them up for me and I will pick them up when I come to GR.

SVO WVO its got to be clear clear, it can have color but no solids

Hello mercedes hawker here. I ran some experiments with wvo last summer. I started with a hotplate and a home made viscosity meter some oil and some petrol diesel. I did not have any problems running unheated oil in concentrations as High as 90% . It was also HOT LIKE FIRE OUTSIDE. I used high quality peanut oil, and a bit of soy. From the restraunt the oil was a light brown, with water and cruchies in the bottom of the cubbies, but you could see through the good stuff at the top. It was settled when I picked it up. But when I got it home I let it settle for a week, suck off the top pour through a coffee filter , let it settle again suck off the top through the coffee filter again ( about $1 apiece) and 15-20 minutes of gravity filtering. Let it settle again, pump it through a 10 micron marine diesel racor filter( filter element $8.00 each). directly into the tank. As I said I ran this unmodified unheated in a '84 normally aspirated benz for about 45 gallons worth (65 gallons from the restraunt, about 20 gallons waste) At the end I was running about 50/50 oil petrol diesel a little over 1000 miles . I never had a problem. I sold the car to a fellow who took it to Washington state. He made it to north Texas, and both fuel filters plugged up ; I had never replaced the filters and The previous owner said they were due when I bought the car. He replaced the filters and had no other problems. I have not heard from him in a while I guess all is well. If fuel prices keep up as they are I am going to get back into the WVO thing. But it was a lot of work .
Has anyone heard of a $1.00/gallon subsidy for oil purchased for biobiesel production. If you could get the subsidy it would make running SVO cost effective NOW. New virgin oil would be the way to go if you can ,Those cruchies and the water were a huge pain.

well just my experiences, trying to save the planet one oil burner at a time

thanks for listening. Any one want to buy a benz?
thanks agian

You could run that oil straight if you had an inline heater.

Maybe a vegitherm and a heater wrap for the filter would be all you need.

30A at 12V thats over 50% of my car's power output just for a heater...it'd probably be better to use a coolant heater loop thing like frybrid sells.

My plan was to put an extra tank in the trunk (a 5 gallon diesel can) and put "in/out" fuel ports on the bottom, and rig it into the fuel system with separate hoses up to the engine compartment from the trunk, then in the engine compartment have an electric selector valve that switched between the main diesel tank and my smaller 5 gallon veg tank....plus one of the frybrid coolant loop heaters....I bet that'd be good enough. This is all only going to happen if I stumbled across an excellent source of clean wvo here in town (unlikely, the city collects it free to run in its own truck fleet) or if diesel gets way more expensive than the veg oil at sams club. Otherwise I'll keep burning dinosaurs as long as I can.....

Side note on the sams oil: It doesn't say hydrogninated anywhere on the box or ingredients....just soybean oil, a preservative, and an antifoaming agent....thats about it.

There won't be crude shortages with prices like they are now. At $60 plus, the saudis and everyone else are making some money at the derrick. The shortage problem is almost always post refinery in the supply chain.

Hello, if crude was $20 per barrel and gas was $1.25 per gallon just a few short years ago, then why isn't gas $3.75 when crude is now $60?

It's called the market place law of supply and demand. Price goes up, demand goes down. and the reverse happens too. Just remember, there are separate markets for crude oil and fuels.

CNN has to "make" the news if there isn't any to report.

It just means you will be driving less or you will be driving the same for a LOT more money. Sooner or later we will be running out of crude oil, maybe not in my lifetime, but soon enough that you and I will not be able to afford to fill up our vehicles with gas or diesel.

I said to a professor last July that we would soon see gas prices over $3 a gallon (they we well under $2/gal at the time). He scoffed and said not in this country. It happened about 5 weeks later.

We will see gas prices over $5/gal this summer/fall.

Resources are finite, especially at the profligate rate we waste them.

It has already effected our "national security." Iraq will be known as the First Resource War of the 21st century. There will be more.

Since I am partially obsessed with learning about issues like oil supply/shortages/other events and such, I found in my readings that the USA consumes approximately 3,900-4,000 gallons of oil per second at any given time of the day. About 320-330 million gallons a DAY. This translates into about 22.5-23 million barrels of oil per day. Thats simply astounding. I mean, there's only so much in the ground! and thats just us! Think about what the world as a whole uses every single day....its somewhere around 88-90 million barrels a day. I can't even imagine a quantity that large....

Thumbs up pAWO SD

The stuff on the bottom is the 10% saturated fat (listed on the label)from SOY that settles naturally after 45 days of sitting undisturbed.
It is FINE to use that you paranoid M-B freek.
(-:
It is not hydrogenated! It is not aniaml fat!!

Close your eyes; mix it with some acetone; some PS cetane boost, and a gallon of RUG; pour it in your almost empty tank of Diesel fuel. AND enjoy the RIDE!!!!

If it's already in the 60's up there you could do it now!!!!

So...theorizing here........say its mid spring....60's-70's outside....and I have a mix of RUG and this sam's soy oil etc... (or some other wvo if I can find any) sittin' in my car's regular tank...how well does it do for cold startup, aka, the car has sat a day or more and I go out and glow/start it up, will it start up just as well as when it was on diesel? Does any of the fat get stuck in the secondary filter? I had to seal mine on with silicon to keep it from leaking(the bolt on the filter housing), and changing it more often wouldn't be very cool at all......on diesel I get a good 25,000 miles/2 years per secondary.....

You could call me the most paranoid MB diesel owner in existence.

It will start up every time like it was on diesel but will smell nicer, and make less rattle.
Once you add RUG and acetone it will be thinned out for good..(temps above 30's...) It won't get stuck in your $10. secondary filter.

If you like it , I would just add a 12V facet fuel pump to assist delivery...
My 300D runs great on this for last 8,000 miles and smells GREAT!!!
