300D 3rd & 4th gear disappeared!

85 300 D turbo automatic trans. Just bought car. 185000 miles and extremely clean. From neutral to drive would take about 2 seconds to engage, otherwise shifts were OK and solid. Parked it for about 5 minutes, turned engine off, restarted and took off and it's as if 3rd and 4th gears are completely gone. Engine turns up as though the clutch were disengaged. Pull shifter back to 1 and it goes into second and stays. 1st and 2nd shift fine. Fluid level good, and smells fine. Any ideas? Have searched forums and found much info about slippage, but nothing about gears just going away. Great site, BTW!

For the trans to shift the governor must create pressure..if the governor doesn't turn then no pressure. IF you have someone that can SAFELY check the governor operation then that would be the place to start.
