I doubt it. The exhaust timing was something absurd like 2 degrees BTDC. As I said, the later turbo engines (which were otherwise nearly identical) used the same camshaft timing as the older non-turbo engines, and produced more power than the early turbo engines.

NHRA banned turbochargers in Top Fuel. The turbo'ed Top Fuel experimental engines produced close to 30% MORE power than the Roots blower engines. At the time these engines pushed a few Top Fuel faster than ever before. At the time Top Fuel engines were producing @ 6000hp. The turbo engines made better than 8000hp and broke dynos, vaporize clutches, rear gears, etc. NHRA squashed them, just like NASCAR squashes most any new technology. There are turbo drag classes but IIRC they don't run head to head with superchargers.

I believe the engineering term is adiabatic efficiency. A turbo or supercharger increases an engines adiabatic efficiency and a turbo is more efficient by a pretty good margin.

interesting

i confess i have not followed drag racing for many years.

in street applications though i feel that the choice of turbo or super depends on many factors mostly related to packaging etc.

Having just told my customer his V8 BMW has totally blown apart..due to a low mounted
K&N filter that sucked up a few quarts of rain water......I'd be concerned about where those filters are mounted.

hydrolock

my 80 saab 99 had a low intake snout. my saab mechanic took it off and threw it away for that reason.

the pistons and rods are really strong as long as they are just compressing air. they dont do water.

Like I said, you can get a snorkle kit. On the truck boards, I haven't heard too many people having that issue. Now if you are talking of a Z28 or something like that, I would be leery.

Another 99er is spotted. That's what I put the turbo in, but that one was a '76. In all, I had six or seven of the things. Great little cars.

Even though this thread is going to the Saabs.....didn't the P-38 Lightning have rear mounted turbochargers?

Thumbs up

The STS actually make some pretty decent power, go check out the GM boards or Dodge ones. Lag isn't any worse than you'd think.
