1980 300d/ether ok?
Gentlemen-I am looking to buy a 1980 300d with 237k miles at a local used car lot-actually a buy them at auction place then resell them for great profit. Believe it or not, the car has service records up to around 185k. So, two questions. The car won't start-it cranks but won't fire. The ace mechanic says starting fluid is needed because it needs glow plugs. I didn't want to look like i knew too much about these here diesels, but is starting fluid ok????
Also, the glow plug dash light blinks for awhile then goes off. Is this the correct way that this car is set up? My 240d glow plug light glowed then went out when ready to start-is the flashing light working correctly? Thanks in advance! BTW, I did a quick search of threads and it didn't look like start fluid was ok.........but not sure on glow plugs.

The glow plug light should work the same way as it does on your 240D. No, starting fluid is not a good idea.

If you really MUST use some sort of fluid, wd-40 or something like it would be choice. NO ETHER. If glow plugs are dead, though, I can't imagine that you will get it started using that method.
