It may be an opinion, but a water separator is not useless. It will not provide "zero benefit", it will indicate the presence of water at the very least. I'd be interested in hearing how an additional filter is going to "break" -- if you get bad fuel, the worst that can happen is the filter plugs, something that would happen with the spin-on anyway.

It seems like a ridiculous position arguing against better filtering.

Have em on both my diesels,local BOSCH dealer sells em.Have drained out water from both of em from time to time,good to have an extra layer of protection and they never gave me any trouble.

OK I'm almost ready to buy one. However- I'm concerned about the additional flow resistance that could possibly be introduced, and what kind of consequence it would have.

The Lift pump is fairly strong. I don't think you will have a problem. If you do it will act like there is a plugged filter.

Here is thread on a fuel filter idea that uses the stock 617 filter head but is modified to accept a 2 micron fuel/water separator filter made by Baldwin.
