Steam Cleaner

What do you guys think about this steam cleaner? When I pull the motor out of my wrecked '85, its going to need a serious cleaning. I tried to go at it with Simple Green and stiff brushes but its going to need more. Do you think this would get the job done? Thanks.

I've got a simular one. They work, but are painfully slow. Degreaser and a powerwasher works faster.

I used something similar and had poor results on my 300D during the motor swap.
No pressure, seemed like okay heat.

I ended up quitting and using degreaser and a garden hose.

Next time I will use a pressure washer (gasoline powered, not electric).

You can even rent one for a few hours.

Two words - duty cycle

I looked at one similar to that, but ended up with the more expensive higher wattage model with a hose connecting the wand and the base. I tried degreasing some Saab bearing bracket holders with mine, and here was the experience:
1. Plug in, wait 5 minutes for green light to come on
2. Pull trigger, aim pin-point stream of steam at part, watch grease melt away.
3. 20 seconds later, green light goes off, wait 30-40 seconds for it to come back on.
4. After cleaning a postage stamp sized area, unplug steam cleaner and use de-greaser.

It's a good idea in theory, but the real world deal is that you don't just hold the trigger and spray. These steamers have a duty cycle that you won't find on the box.

I have one with a larger tank and I still had a very very slow time with it. As stated above, pull trigger for a few seconds, wait another 40 seconds, repeat, get frustrated, switch to degreaser.

Anyone want to trade an old Volvo for an '87 300sdl?

Dude that is NOT for cleaning engines, that is more for fabric. Go to Home Depot and get some Zep Citrus degreaser. Best stuff I have ever used for getting off baked on nasty grease. Cuts it like butter and is made form oranges. Then get a cheap pressure washer and get her clean.

When I want to clean an engine I put it in the bed of my truck and swing by the car wash. For $5 worth of quarters you can get er done easy an fast. I bought a broken 240D a couple of weeks ago and did'nt go by the car wash as I was in a hurry (car on dolly), big mistake. I pulled the "grease ball" engine wishing I had cleaned it the easy way before pulling
