How about a nice looking pair from an auto salvage? Thats if you can find them of course. Have heard the originals are far superior to the rebuilts since joining this site.

I agree, and would much rather keep the originals, but the price for boots is ridiculous.

I'll have to see if the local clowns... I mean technicians, can install new boots on my axles.

The deal with Autozoo rebuilt axles is they only replace the joint if they MUST. If it has no play and tests good, they just clean it and install a new boot.

************** sells a kit that includes a new inside can and both boots (for both sides) for $130ish. I ordered it anticipating a simple reboot. It is really a crappy, messy job. After I cleaned everything up and pulled everything apart, I realized that these axles are worn beyond my comfort level. They didn't make any noise yet, but they have serious wear stripes, and some pitting starting. They would last another 10K if I'm lucky.

So, now I'm taking the hit on the restocking fee on the kit and buying reman'ed. I'm just hoping I can talk Advance into giving me my core charge even though now they're missing the boots and inner cans.

BTW, the axles from Advance supposedly have a "lifetime warranty" for whatever that's worth.

I made the mistake of getting an Autozone rebuilt axleshaft for my Mercedes 300D, and I will never buy another one. The new one made just as much noise and had just as much vibration as the one I replaced.

I took it out, got another one, replaced it again, and same situation. I made sure to check everything else while I was under the car, just to see if it was something I hadnt noticed...... Its the axleshaft making that noise..... Im just goint to deal with it until I can afford a new one......

Point is..... I dont trust the Autozone axleshafts....... There are some of their parts that are good, but, not those axles......

Hmmmm, there is an '80 300CD that I could probably get for $200 at the MOST. It had what looked to be near-new axleshafts. I'm starting to reconsider. The motor they say is junk, the body is rusted. It has a near perfect blue coupe interior, newly rebuilt front suspension, lots of new vacuum fittings too.
Hmmmm......
