Summer is on the way, R12 prices going to be silly?
Last summer R12 prices were insane (obviously, people wait until the last minute). Trying to stay ahead of the game this time.
Since I need more than a few pounds of R12 (about 17lbs currently), could I just pick up a 30lbs jug and call it a day? My only question is where I take to have the vehicles evac'd and charged they may/may not have the equipment to use my 30lbs jug. I would rather not be stuck with a $350 paper weight. The cans are going for about $22-25 a pound and the 30lbs tank is about $11-14 per pound Any clues on if I should go for the 30lbs tank or go for 12-14oz cans?

Go for the cans. I had a 30lb jug and it all leaked out! If you get it in cans then they ALL wont go bad.
I gave up on R-12. I love the Freeze 12 better and gets the old MB's very cold. I am going to experiement with 142b and see how that works out. Just have to make sure the oil is compatable.

I disagree. The 30lb cylinder has a valve that can leak. The cans are sealed and while it is possible to leak due to a manufacturing defect, it is remote. Besides you spread the risk of leaking to 30 cans instead of one instance in a 30lb cylinder. One leak there and the whole thing is gone.

Am I going to lose any significant amounts of R12 by doing it myself?
Also, I can just use a set of R12 gauges with the 30lbs tank?

My preference is for the 30lbs tanks since generally they are cheaper and you can charge your system by weight with the exact amount of gas if you us a refrigerent scale. Also with the little cans I've found it difficult to get all the gas out of the can with some remaining and therefore, wasted or released into the environment. |

Why would you need to evacuate the old stuff at a shop? Why not just remove the valve stems & let the old r12 go in the air?

Where did you score those bits? As well as the o-ring. Seems like a good way to go there.
