Enjoy it now. I'll bet money that inspections get tougher in the future. Let us know how the mileage changes.

No Federal Enforcement

I know that messing with the emissions is messing with the EPA, but they have little or no enforcement. It is just like my car with Euro headlights, I am breaking some Federal DOT rule but New York State could care less and I have never heard of any Federal DOT enforcement for private vehicles.

I know that even with the low sulfur diesel in Europe they still have catalysts on the diesels. I am not a proponent of more emissions, but I thnk the chances of getting caught for hollowing out your cat. in a state that has no emission regulations for diesels is negligable.

What kind of mileage are you getting?

I agree that it is highly unlikely that someone would be caught for this without state emissions checks. But posting plans to do so in public makes me infer that the poster doesn't know that there is indeed a chance of trouble.

I'm sure glad no one has ever discussed defeating their EGR on this forum, big brother may be watching.

Or running a 'test' pipe, in place of the 'cat'....permenently

Thumbs up

::Gasp!!!:: I gutted the cat on my SDL... it passed the inspection. Almost every place only has Safety for them.

If I had a '99 TD, I'd have gutted it also.

The best way to gut an old cat without removal is from the top. Pull the whole exhaust, cut a hole in the top, do the nasty, and weld the hole closed. Nobody will know of the change except you and whoever you tell.

The cat on the 99 is visible in the engine compartment so there really is no discrete place to do it. It kind of does an upside down Z in the downpipe as it exits. The place I cut it is probably the least seen place.

I do notice there is more smoke at idle and the exhaust does smell more. Mmm more french fries. I guess the cat did filter out a good deal of particulates.
