camshaft timing
Hi,
Can anyone give me the opening and closing angles of inlet and exhaust valves of a om621.918 engine (w110 200D) with "18" camshaft for the 2mm method.. Thanks! |

Am not sure what you're asking for..... But what happens with the engine set at TDC? The camshaft mark at the stantion should line up with crankshaft pulley mark at zero. Any discrepancy, say 4-12 degrees, is timing chain stretch and can be compensated by adjusting injector pump timing.

Well,Diesel Dog,it`s a long story..
engine timing puzzle The damn pointer refuses to show ATDC,no matter how hard I try(shows 5 degr.BTDC)...so I`m gonna do the 2mm intake valve lift method to establish how correct the timing is...DannyM wrote a pictorial how to do it,it`s easy...BUT my camshaft is "18",and is not listed in the service manual I have...so I do not know the exact numbers, which vary with the different cams. I found this minutes ago: http://mb.braingears.com/114_115_Disk1/program/Engine/Repair/00-0.pdf page 12- camshaft 18(om615 and 621 share the same cam)And here comes another reasonable question-how relevant are these numbers, when my timing chain is 1 link longer(ex-factory) as compared to the om615 chains Would it affect reading? Tooo many "if"`s here..I don`t know even whether the damn pointer is accurate The balancer doesn`t seem to slip And it `s almost impossible to establish TDC on PC diesel without pulling the head...So how do you think shoul I trust these om615 numbers? Did the valve job,the engine starts right up(cold and warm),idles smooth, shuts up right...some inj.knock though... Thanks for the patience and interest... You'll get more help in the diesel forum than here. Just like the Vintage guys, they tend to stick to their forum for a large part.

Sounds like your not far off in primary engine pump timing except for the nailing sounds. They are not cam related in my opinion. I do not expect that they made any radical grind cams for these engines anyways Also not sure whats disturbing you exactly. Is it the overall sound of the engine. You might try retarding the pump a little and see if it sounds better and power is still adaquate. On the otherhand since it is old if you have never had the injectors pop tested perhaps its time. Beyond a certain age we are entering the world of restoration more than just simple repair. More like actual restoration and I have been mentally experimenting with ideals to test things with home methods that are cheap, hopefully accurate and conclusive. They are really in the primative stage and will take quite awhile to work out but everytime I hear of a situation like yours I can see the applications if viable. Other than that it's pretty well live with it or spend money. I never seem to lack a place to use the money saved by using unorthodox methods to some extent. Just my methology and not for everyone.

Number of chain links make no difference to timing.....stretch does that.
With extra link the tensioner will have a hard job keeping the chain tight. My old book says.......200D cam spec's as follows : Cam Code # 02 Cam Code # 12. Cam Code # 13. Cam code # 17. Theres no mention of an #18. It has a NB about injector noise.....190Dc pointer installed in a 200D. .

Hey Vox,
I wouldn't worry about the cam markings too much. My cam marking don't match up either. I think I have a code #11 or something. After searching and a lot of asking around I was able to dig up absolutely nothing on that code. Just use the engine number and year of vehicle and you'll be fine. That cam will have the same specifications of the ones that are listed. DAnny

The above cams are all identical in timing spec's on the 200D engine. They only varied in external/internal/with/without oiling groves and hollow or solid cam billets.
The only reference to knocking/noise was the possibility the 200D had the earlier 190Dc engine timing pointer installed which it says RETARDS the timing 3 degrees and later injection lines being slightly smaller bore also cause knock. ......but by now, the knocking problem would have been resolved some years ago. The 190Dc pointer #121 032 01 15. 200D pointer #121 032 02 15. Difference is 1/16" ( 2mm.) wider spacing between the closest opening edges stamped into the pointer. This means that with 4 degrees chain stretch and wrong pointer, you would have stacked retard of 7 degrees. I have the part # for the offset cam keys too. .
