'81 300SD Glow Plug Relay
Hello. My glowplug relay on my '81 300SD is not working all the time so I want to replace it. I understand there is one that keeps the glowplugs on for a couple of minutes after the engine is running. Does anyone have one of these or know where I can get one? I saw a Bosch #7001591953 on Ebay but it came with glowplugs too. Since I just replaced my glowplugs, I only need the relay. Thanks for your help.

You are talking about one of the Bosch Duraterm relays.
I have the part # for this at my house, so if no one posts it before tonight I will post it. I'm pretty sure the part you saw on e-bay is not the same number I had, though. If you don't want to wait you could probably find the part # by googling 'duraterm' or searching for it on this site. Edit: Also, only certain plugs will stay on longer with the new relay. If the plugs you put in are new and are Bosches there's a good chance they're the right ones. I believe they sell these on Fastlane if you want to check the part #. When I searched for plugs on Fastlane for my '85 300D, the Duraterm style plugs came up.

Relays
I bought the kit @ http://www.***************/search/productx.aspx?sid=uosdx0aa2b00vfz3cxuen345&partnumber=0250201955
it comes with new pencil G/Ps as opposed to the filiment type, the kit is for a 240D 4 Cyl so for the 5 cyl you will need a extra plug and a extra smaller relay. Does the 81 have pencil type G/Ps or filiment?. I just re-read your post you are looking for the relay only.

I have the upgraded relay installed in my 82 300D, it does seem to help with cold running and reduce the smoke when it's cold. I also suspect it causes the glow plugs to burn out sooner due to the extended use, but I've been happy with mine for several years. I would just buy the kit with the 4 GPs and keep them as spares, sooner or later you will need them anyway.

The relay # is 0 281 003 096.
The plugs that go with it are 0 250 201 039 -711. I've discovered the plugs work just fine with the old relays, too.

You can use the large style pencil plugs in place of the loop style and you DONT have to replace the relay. I did the conversion on my '79 and it runs great.
