Dawes Boost Controller

There have been numerous threads relating to this device, so I'll keep this short and sweet...

After going through said forum threads as well as visiting the Dawes boost controller Web site (http://www.dawesdevices.com/boost.html), it is still not clear to me what the difference is between the basic and hybrid model boost controllers other than the $18 difference in price.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Thanks!!!

They are the same, except that the Hybrid has a 'synthetic' mechanism, and the ball valve seat is polished for better sealing.

Go with the Basic, the Hybrid is 'better', but you won't know the difference on your car, trust me. They are both good quality devices.

peace,
sam

I actually don't have either.

But I've been inside a lot of boost controllers like this, and they all work with the same basic principle. A spring holds a ball against the input, which prevents the air from getting to the wastegate. When the pressure exceeds the force of the spring, the ball moves back, and the air flows to the wastegate, opening it. The tighter the boost controller is adjusted, the stronger the spring force, and the higher the pressure needed to move the ball aside.

Basically, they are very simple devices, and there is no reason to have the 'special' edition for a simple application like this. If you thought that .01 second faster spool up would make or break your tuning scheme, then go for it, but the simple one is quality, and will do the job admirably.

peace,
sam

One Last Thing...

Am I to understand that if I install a boost controller, there is really no point in tweaking the wastegate adjustment?

Yup, thats the idea!

The wastegate adjustment would return your boost to stock levels, but the boost controller does the same thing. If you have a KKK turbo, its easy to adjust the wastegate, but its a pain to do with the Garrett turbos.

Plus, a boost controller should make for quicker spool up, and more time spent at full boost.

sam

A little help

This Dawes controller website shows a few different ways to hook it up.

It talks about using the intake. (which leads me to believe that a line from the Banjo bolt would be it)

but it also shows that you could use a turbo outlet.. which to ME looks like the short piece of hose that runs from the turbo to the wastegate

That makes sense to me.. the short hose (6 inches long) that goes into the wastegate... the controller would hold that signal and leave the wastegate closed until the spring is overcome.

anyone have a dawes installed and can take a pic?

JP

I don't have pics but you do install it between the intake manifold and the wastegate. The stock wastegate may open at 8psi or so but if the boost controller holds the signal until the pressure reaches 13psi or whatever you set it at, the wastegate won't see any pressure until the controller passes it along when it opens at your set level. Also, please don't go messing with your boost pressures without a good, properly installed gauge. Its not one of those things you can do by feel.
