heat...no heat....heat

I've got hot air when the heat and blower is on for a minute then it turns cold air. If I turn the heat off for a minute or two then turn the blower back on its hot, then goes cold again. But it also depends on the blower speed. I, II and III (the first three speeds) allow warm to hot air through but for less time as the speed of the blower is increased. At full on blower speed, its hot for 5 seconds then cold air comes out. Whats up with that? Thanks for reading and I'm glad its starting to get warm here.

Well one place might be to check your coolant level. I don't know about the 87 but if your coolant level is low on the 123 it won't go through that upper hose and then you might have problems. Since you have the aluminum head that might be something I would check on anyway, just because.

One other thing might be to flush your radiator system if you just got the car. I've heard of (and seen mine) of systems clogging up with rust and particulate. May be blocked and it only works on the lower settings and for a short while as the heater core can't keep up with the fan with such a low flow.

I just fixed an almost identical problem (heat for a few seconds, then cold air) by a monovalve rebuild. Apparently a torn diaphragm on the plunger can be pulled by coolant flow to block the valve's exit. So you get heat when the valve opens, but only until the blockage.

Ben

What is and where is the monovalve?
