Dot 3 or Dot 4?

I am getting ready to replace my master cyl. I know there is dot3 in there now. My local MB dealer says dot 4 is better, but wasn't very emphatic about it.

Is dot 4 really better? What is the difference?

What is the best way to get all of the dot 3 out? I have heard that mixing 3 and 4 is bad.

Thanks,
Mark

dot4 has a higher boiling point. the best way would be to use a sucktion device and then replace with dot4. mixing will not harm. stay away from dot5. its silicone fluid and will gum up the brake system

No sense tryin to save a few bucks on brake fluid...it can come back and bite you, hard. Has anyone tried DOT5.1? Not to be mistaken with the silicone DOT5, its supposed to have a higher boiling point than DOT3, DOT4, and DOT5 and is compatible with Dot3 and Dot4.

I wish AutoZoo carried Dot 4 in big containers, then I could put it to them for their gift card promo.

Big containers aren't a plus unless you use a lot of it. Once the seal is broken, it will absorb water.

I haven't tried DOT5.1, and seems to be available only online, think its meant for autocrossers or something.

DOT 4.

Even if the seal on the large container is broken, it's not going to absorb water any faster than you brake system normally does. You realize there's a small hole in the cap of the resevoir on the MC? It's not a closed system.

You're probably never going to need the extreme performance of a DOT 5, you'd be throwing your money away. Mercedes probably isn't that emphatic about DOT 4 over 3 either because the main thing to be concerned with is renewing the fluid annually.

dot five

is silicone and i wouldnt recommend it for benzes. i have used it in the past and had some problems. the seals want to swell and stick in the calipers a little too much, then the fuid heats up, expands and causes dragging brakes.

it works great in drum brake american iron though.
