neutral safety switch.
It attaches to your shift linkage on your transmission, and sends the electric signal to your back-up lights when your put it in reverse. Also, when it goes bad the engine will not turn over because it thinks it is in gear. |

Ah yes, I've never had reverse lights....never checked the NSS, should have had the dealer change it when they had the tranny out three years ago, oh well. Anyways, I've never had a single solitary incident of my car not starting because of the shifter, in fact...my car has only not started 2 times ever, and it was because the battery died during cranking at about -10F
Since I rigged in that switch I have no current plans to replace the neutral safety switch....if I ever have the tranny out in the future I'll probably do it though.

I received my new expansion tank/plug kit yesterday. It is not at all obvious to me how that metal clip is inserted into the grove around the boss that the plug fits in.
Anyone care to share a hint??

Can an older MB, like an '80 240D for exaple [ ] be converted to have an expansion tank if it didn't come with one originally?
Without the tank, then it pukes out antifreeze from time to time after you stop the car. I didn't know if I would have to get a radiator without the cap, or it I could just install the tank and appropriate hose. Any other problems with this????

Anyone care to share a hint?? Are you replacing the tank in your SD? I just looked at mine, without removing, I can't tell what metal clip, or boss for that matter, your reffering to. Pics?

The stock tank does not have the provision for the coolant level sensor...that is what is being plugged. Look at the attached pic labeled "bottom".

It has been a while since I did this, but I remember having some difficulty seating the plug so that the ring fits correctly. I don't exactly remember what the trick was, but I sorta remember it being a two man operation. Of course, borrow a proper grip ring tool if you don't have one.

I ended up modifying one of my snap ring pliers with a grinder so the jaws would fit into the small holes at each end of the ring (thanks Bodyart!).
I found that putting the O-ring into the hole and then shoving the plug in allowed the plug to seat all the way in very easily. If I put the O-ring on the plug and then tried to put the plug in, it was difficult. Thanks all for the replies. Tim
