Question Tach on a 300SD

Good morning all.
Why is it we seem to have problems with these tachometer..Is there a permanent *fix* for this? What do we need to look for??
Do we need to remove the dash cluster to access the tach?
Regards

If you slide the dash cluster out the tach can be removed from the back.

But I have not really seen anybody say that was the answer.
If you have the model with the tach amplifier on the left fenderwell,
it seems that little part is the culprit.
Although I have put various things up into the can to create
more pressure on this part, and just two days ago crimped the female
side of all the connectors to make better contact, and checked the clearance
at the crankshaft signal pickup, I am not convinced my problems
will go away. I'll find out this weekend.

The tach amplifier gave me fits on my '82 300D/4.3L V6, and finally I took the cap all apart, scraped the goo off the circuit board and resoldered all the connections. It hasn't failed since (>3yrs).

1. Open hood.
2. Stand over drivers side fender.
3. Look Down.

Described as a upside down trash can.
Little more than 2 inches across (round)
and 4 or 5 inches high.

Unscrews easily.

Tach amp solution

if you still can't figure out where the tach amp is. just do a search on ebay, there are usually a few for sale, if not search advanced and completed auctions in 123 tach and you will find several with pictures. easy once you know what it looks like.

What did you use to scrape off that stuff? I tried several things without luck. It looked like it would takes hours of work to do it.

As I recall, it was a time consuming task - I used a combination of knife, small screwdriver used as a chisel, and patience. Also, I resoldered the pin connector ends. I made a little drawing so I could replace the pins in the right holes.
Good luck with it!
