The Bosch filters do indeed come with the crush washers, too many in fact, they come with a copper one and an aluminum one, always have (have been using them for years, just switched to Hengst recently...) no idea what purpose the aluminum one has....it also comes with the oil housing gasket, everything thats required, and they are like $9.08 or something.

Mann filters

My Mann filters come with a large rubber O ring and two washers.....one is copper and the other is some other type of metal. Why are there two washers? I know the copper one goes on the drain plug.....but where does the other go?

Thanks folks!
Keith

OIL FILTERS: which one to buy????

There is disagreement on what constitutes a quality filter. First, the area of contention is the bypass section; oil that flows through this area is returned to the sump, it does not go directly to the bearings.

Some people think that tightly packed cotton fiber is the best bypass media. I would tend to agree with that sentiment if the cotton was clean. What we are finding is that much of the cotton fiber has dirt particles embedded. While this dirt, IMO, likely does not make it out of the filter, there is some contention about it being there in the first place.

I personally believe that the Fram filters made in Turkey are currently the best option. They use a material similar to kite string. Some feel this does not do as good of a job as the cotton fiber, although it is clean with no dirt.

It's a personal choice. Read the link and draw your own conclusions.

A particular oil filter (and other types of filters) will often have numerous applications. It may be used on dozens of different engine models. Not all engines have the same size oil drain plug. So the seal that does not fit is for an engine that you don't have.

I'm pretty sure that Fram has had to buy some owners of Dodge trucks with cummins diesels new engines.

I don't have the details at hand but there were court cases with settlements resulting from filters having disintegrated partly and the filter pieces or debri clogging vital oil passages.

A look in this site could provide the details: http://www.turbodieselregister.com/

See if you could find a NAPA parts indy store and they will at least have a WIcks/ NAPA brand...Better than a Fram but not quite there....

We have a Napa half a block away from our Autozone.....infact there's about 6 auto parts stores in a 5 mile radius by my house.

Yeah there is a bunch of Napa, Carquest, Autozone, and Pepboys stores around. They are all useless for my cars though. I don't think I have even tried to get a MB part from them in years.

They can't get it, when they can its either junk or really expensive. Don't even talk to them about an SDL, they can't get anything period. Heck I am surprised the car is even in their computer.

I buy wax and rags from them, since I'll be using more Griots I buy rags from them thats about it.

Sorry...more oil filter questions

I've been reading a lot of the threads regarding oil filters lately. I have a couple of questions, Brian (substitute your own name if you happen to have $.02), if/when you read this:

1. The Wix filter has no bypass and I've read it filters to 25 microns. For filters that have the bypass, what does the section that sends oil to the engine filter to?

2. I think I've read that with a bypass filter, oil can take a little longer to get to the engine. True of False? Important or not?

3. The factory OE filter - is this Knecht? Or is it any of the German brands you can get on Fastlane, or can you only get it from the dealer?

Thanks. From my research the Wix sounds good except the lack of a bypass gives me some pause.

Corporations do not market products any longer, they market labels. If you buy a product at one store one week and another at another store the next week they may have the same label but be totally different products. Buying name brands is a sucker play.

Actually, I've been using Wix for a while -- they are the only filters in the McParts that atually have a wound cord filter in the bypass section (they are all hollow, by the way, but usually stuffed with gin trash, which works, but sheds crap).

$13. Only problem is that the rubber o-ring doesn't fit right, it falls down if you aren't carefull. We cut two of them last time we changed oil.

Peter
