valve noise at high RPM

I have a 76 300d 115 with 94K miles and it has almost like a lifter or valve noise at high RPM's and the valves were recently adjusted I am new to the mercedes diesel and I do not know if this is normal for these or if it is something I should get checked out. It is mainly 70 mph and above it is not real bad but it is not as smooth as the rest of the RPM band or happens right before shifting if I run the RPMS out, THanks for any help.

i bet he

meant withOUT hearing it.

i cant imagine a valve noise that would be hearable above the roar of the diesel motor on the highway.

i would be thinking of other sources for this noise. is your oil pressure good?

Yes the oil pressure is very good on the car, I will be honest I run my 04 ram witht he cummins up to redline and it is smooth and with this car it is almost like a lifter noise on a gas engine at very high RPM 's and I am not sure if this is typical for these 617 mercedes diesels or not thanks for the post so far.

Noises are hard to describe mind comprehend from a description. If by any chance you know another person with one of these engines and can go for a drive up to say 70mph in it it may help or even eliminate your concern. Some of our cars are quite noisy at speed.

Could be an exhaust leak.

Thanks for the good advice so far. I was kind of thinking a ride in another one of these cars would probably be good for me to hear. There is a shop in town called Foreign Affairs and they have been recommended to me by alot of people and I guess they do good quality work. I wanted to check with the Uber brians of the mercedes world before I got all worked up over a little problem. I could record the car via my laptop if anyone thinks that could help, garageband on my powerbook actually has a pretty good recording quality. If anyone knows how or where I could upload it so you guys could listen. Thanks again.

It could be injector ping. Try some injector cleaner if you haven't done so already.

I am in the process of injector cleaner the fuel in the tank is pretty old and I am running sea foam to treat it and some powerservice, the fuel is from the past owner, so it is probably 6 months old, I changed the filter before I started driving it and once I run this tank down I am oging to change the filter again just in case there was some crud in there, also my injector return lines are leaking like 2 of them could these 2 issues be related? Thanks again

I don't think Sea Foam will do much good in the tank. PowerService or Redline, maybe. Greased Lightning Fuel Treatment is another good cleaner. It could very well be the old fuel that's causing the ping. Once you run it down to near empty and refill and you still have the ping, running some Diesel Purge directly from a jar may help or you can do it right away. If nothing works, then it's time to pull the injectors and test them.

Do replace those injector lines if they're leaking. There was one person I remember whose knock disappeared after replacing the lines, probably because he had air getting sucked into the injectors. In any case, you don't want any fuel leaks.
