Anyone have a Manual Boost Controller?

I installed mine this evening and now hit 14-15psi on the SD, too high. I'm curious if I installed it properly or what the deal is here.

Good news I'm no longer going to be an 8psi wonder. :D It pulls better from about 3000-4500rpm.

So I'm lookin' for pics or how someone has theirs done. Mine is simply installed between the compressor outlet and the wastegate...

could you post some pictures of yours?

If this digicam ever would have come that I ordered I would. :(

I think mine may be in backwards.

I have one "installed" right now. It's currently hollow. I need to goto ace hardware and get a softer spring for it. With the stock spring it will only put out 15psi+ as low as it will go.

I'd only use a ball and spring type. The "controlled leak" type are not worth the time.

I have the Ball + Spring style. I'll reverse it here in a bit after I finish eating and give it a shot, worse case I'll pick up a softer spring. :)

Okay, it was backwards. Works fine now, 11.5-12psi at high RPM.

Just for S&G's I went to check my controller. Guess what I found... :o

:D at least it's an easy fix. I wasn't aware they had to be installed a certain direction. :o

But the 12psi is nice from the 8psi my SD had... top end power doesn't seem to drop off nearly as suddenly

So how do you install one of these and whats a good brand to go with? No idea what boost im puttin out.

Hit Man X 04-04-2006 04:36 AM

As I understand all '85s are low on boost. I wouldn't be suprised if you have 7-9psi like most do. I bet the fueling in the IP is low on them too. 11-12psi seems to be the factory spec for the 617.

I picked mine up from ebay for $12 shipped. Just install it between the wastegate and compressor housing. 30min job. Just be sure to have a boost gauge handy to measure it for proper spec.

There is not realy any brand. 99% of manual controllers sold on eBay and many other places are homemade and use off the shelf brass fittings. All of the parts can be found at the local hardware store and can be made yourself for $4-10, no special tools needed.

The major parts list:
Brass T-joint
Two brass 1/8" barbed tube fittings
A allen bolt or hex head bolt
Lock nut for the bolt
Spring
Stainless steel ball bearing

That's it. Complete units can be found all over eBay for $10-35 depending on sale price and shipping costs. 5 minutes to install, cut the tube where you want to put it, put it in place (the right direction) and tune to the boost you need.

I probably should have asked how to build my own. :D Ah well, the price was right and shipping wasn't too bad.

Ah, how simple. :D

Took the SD down the freeway today, seems to have a lot more "pep" if you will from 2800-3500rpm (when I let out, don't need anymore tickets).

I recommend this to everyone if you have silly low boost.
