Check fuses. And if all are good, pull the gauge cluster and dissassemble. Look for burnt circuits on the circuit board. Have they ever worked? What has changed?

My temp gage just started acting up--jumping around, irratic readings until I'm driving like normal rpm. Then it level out to a constant 90 degrees or so. I'm thinking it is one of the wires that is in the harness that plugs into the back of the instrument cluster. Trying to trace it down, but it might be your problem, too.
