Optimum maintenance schedule?
Is there an optimum maintenance schedule that anybody has compiled for these 123 diesels?
Seems like the goal is to keep these things running as long as possible... I know general maintenance info is available in different places, but what about a really exhaustive checklist that would assure that if you followed it, you are doing everything you possibly could. I was thinking about putting one together on an Excel spreadsheet... Maybe where you could enter the mileage and date each time you did something.... then at a later date enter your mileage or a date at the top and it would green, yellow, or red flag different items... then you could keep up with it at a glance??? I would add items like a diesel purge or other non standard, but optimal/ recommended maintenance... A real customized solution. What do you think? |

Answer
Last time I searched this topic = I was lost in many hundreds of threads for days.
Try a few searches, then revive this thread, (if it fades out). Have a great day.

Mine is
change oil & filter every 3K fuel filter every 3rd oil change ALL other fluids every 30K (diff, trans, coolant and brake fluid) Belts every 50K Diesel purge when I think I feel a change in running condition. GPs when I feel the starting weaken. Biocide once a year Tires, suspension pieces, belt & engine shocks, motor mounts, bushings, alignment, a/c charge / leak fix, wheel bearings, flex disc and leaking vac lines as needed. Wax twice a year/ wax as you dry the rest of the year. apply silicone to all rubber parts twice a year. Lube key tumblers, hinges and hood release/throttle cable twice a year. Have not figured out the timing chain (603) yet. You will need to add valve adjustments to the list.

Once you love your diesel, you will be consciously aware of the mileage at all times and anxiously awaiting the next opportunity to drain fluids, etc... |

What are conservative intervals for the following items?
Lets see: Allignment Check/Adjust Whenever the tires wear funny or you do front end work Windshield Wipers Whenever they need it, mine last about a year Transmission Hoses When they are leaking, in my book 10 years is pushing it for any rubber hose. Glow Plugs Replace When they die, I do mine if they are original as well Wheel Bearing Repack or Replace? 100k miles repack plus new seals, replace if worn CV Joint Service? When the boots rip buy rebuilds Sunroof Lube Once a year MB claims, it depends. You need to look at it see if its dirty and needs cleaning. Intercooler Clean?? You don't have one, however you should clean out the radiator and oil cooler. Every couple of years is probably enough, crap does build up. Engine Mounts/Shock Check If they are original change them, but the mounts collapse over time so you can inspect them. Injection Pump Timing Check/Adjust Whenever most people never check it but they should. These engines will run OK out of time for a very very long time. A/C Freon Level Check When the AC stops working, if there is a leak.
