cdi long oil change interval Q

What has changed from 617 & 603 motors to allow the new cdi (don't know engine desig. ) to go 13K miles between oil changes?

Not to start another oil change war

i wanted to know the same thing with the TDI's. My moms passat TDI takes required 505.01 spec oil. So i bought ELF 5w40 505.01, and guys on the TDIclub said it allows for 10K intervals.

how? My SD i change it out every 3K

Nothing's really changed except that MB determined that 13k mile oil change intervals would be more than sufficient to make it last 50k, which takes through the lease and out of warranty.

If it were me, I'd change the oil every 5k miles.

No need for Luddites: 10K oil changes on VW TDIs is routine with proper synthetic oil.

So who is going to try a 10K interval on a 617/603 first?

A lot has changed. Take the 603 vs the 617 for example. 603's produce a lot less soot, so less gets into the oil. You can run 8k mile changes and be very conservative on a 603 with D1.

606's can go 10k without much trouble, ever see an oil report on a 606? The soot loading is real low, they probably have as much soot in the oil at 10k as the old 617's had at 4k-5k.

CDI's have far better and more precise fuel injection. So less soot is produced. I wouldn't be surprised if the oil even stays clear on those things for a few hundred miles.

As the diesel gets newer the fuel injection systems are greatly improved.

Soot is what limits you with the diesels.
