Need Info On 84 190d 2.2
I have a 85 300sd that I run bio in and would like the car more if it was a standard. I was looking at a 1984 190d 2.2 diesel car.Was wondering if it is the same engine that was in my 300sd? Is the 190 a good car for bio. Any info on the car would be appreciated.thanks

The 2.2 engine in the 190,was the first "modern" diesel, different then the 4cyl in the 240d or the 5cyl in the 300d,300cd.300sd...it is a close relative to the engines used in the 1986-87 300sdl or 87 300d,300td.People do not like those cars for some reason, they look ugly, that is why they are dirt cheap, those early 190's,the engine is one of the most economical diesels you are gonna find anywhere, with a stick shift, you dont need any bio diesel,a good 2.2 L,will get you easy 40mpg on the hwy and 30-32 in the city.

So the only reason they are cheap is because they are ulgy? Will the 190 engine work with bio like the 300 engine will?

It is a little more modern design of engine to start with. I would probe all the alternative fuel sites to find out what long term results have been like with same type engines if the information is there. Your question is in some ways is very specific. I have really no bias against alternative fuels but more care and caution seems to be a requirement than thought previously. Especially in the fuels preparation for use. One bad dose of fuel seems to be one too many in some cases lately. Some companys like volkswagon are starting to void warranties on new deisels unless very specific alternative fuels are used I understand. May be totally wrong but just too many injection pumps being changed out in my area in last year or so.

So the 190 are four cylinder, none turbo.

In 1987 the 190D was offered in 2.5L Turbo guise. The performance is comparable to a 617 5cyl turbo, but is slightly more sporting because the w201 chassis is smaller and more nimble... if you want one of these be prepared to look long and hard.. very few of them are out there. in comparison to 1984 W201's- All 1987 W201's feature a revised dashboard-which extends towards and flows into the console, & larger 15" wheels of the same design.

I agree the w201 190 series cars are very handsome when well kept, just like any other car. They look esp. great with 15" or 16" 8-hole MB wheels and european headlights. Clean, crisp, taut, simple, & sporty!
I have even seen pre-facelift models (1984-1988) pull off the eariler design bundt wheels...they are neat cars bottom line.

There is a 1987 190D near me. It has a bad tranny, only 1st and 3rd gear. It is still like a little rocket ship! Very fast car, much less diesel. It is navy blue, and the paint is fading, but interior is cherry. 285K on the clock. If it had good paint and a rebuilt tranny I would trade the wagon for it in a heartbeat. Tight little car.....

Howdy,
I drive an '84 190d 2.2 manual. I'm getting approx 35 - 40 mpg but the car when new was capabable of 45+. The naturally aspirated OM601 is a durable engine and has adequate power for the W201 chassis but it is no ball of fire. It is still fun to drive with the manual transmission and is more modern than the older OM616 engines. You won't have to adjust the valve clearance in these cars because the OM6OX series of engines have hydraulic valve tappets. The cars themselves are not as durable inside as the older cars I am familiar with (W108, W115, W116, and W123 series). The interior pieces are more plasticy and the climate control systems are pretty weak. They do handle pretty well, but these are pretty small cars in this day of super-suv's prowling our highways. Remember, this car was designed in an era of 55 mph national speed limits. While 70 mph is certainly do-able, the car is more comfortable at 65 mph and 75 - 80 mph is going to require a tailwind. One other positive thing about these cars is that there are gobs of parts available for them. As with any 22 year old car, you will feed it a constant diet of parts as they fail, but parts are easy to find and they are fairly easy to work on. Heck, even the A/C evaporator is accessable without removing the dash--try that in your W123. As far as biofuel usage, the diesel injection system on these is strictly mechanical. You should have no more problems with these engines as with any of the older ones--they even use the same injectors (with different nozzles). Sholin

the 2.2 is less powerful than the 2.5. but i should think that a 2.2 would do 80, unless it has issues or is tired. the 2.5 might do 100 and the 2.5 turbo would top 100 with ease i think.
