HF Compression Tester

Will this compression tester http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=93644

be compatible with my 84 300D Turbo?

As far as indicated yes. A forum member was kind enough to pick up one for me a week or so ago. 16.99 in their catalogue I believe. It was 19.95 on line but they will honour the catalogue price I believe. Mine as not arrived yet. Also on item you can view the manual and it indicates every engine the adapters cover. Someone mentioned they are 9.99 at hudsons I believe by the way if you have one near you. For limited hobby use such as I have it should prove more than adaquate. The thing I personally did not like is it does not have the volkswagon injector hole adapter but I will use one volkswagon injector I modified for my own home built diesel compression checker years ago or make another.

If the tester does not have the specific adaptor to fit your engine the easiest thing to do is to modify an old glow plug. I used an old glow plug, took the business end off, welded one of the quick connects supplied with the tester to the outside end of the gp and Bob's your uncle as they say in the classics.

I bought one from Harbor Freight...

...and it had more doo-dads than the one pictured in the ad. It also cost a bit more, $24.99 I believe. The directions indicated that one should measure through the injector, which I did because I was replacing the injectors in my 617, but it looked like one of the doo-dads was the right size for the glow plug hole. Got good readings when I measured.
