1975 240d will not shift into 3rd

hello everyone,
i am eager to become a mercedes diesel owner as well.
a guy i know is selling his car. it shifts between 1 and 2 fine but will not shift into 3rd. the engine supposedly runs great. i am wondering if this is a transmission replacement or vacuum component replacement. i saw a similar thread about this problem, but it is for an 83 not a 75.
83 240D tranny won't shift past 2nd gear.
has anyone heard of this problem in a '75?
best regards

Hello,

Kinda a bummer that no one has gotten to your thread but I think the problem is 99% of the people on this forum own 123's. I'm still a newbie myself and havn't experienced every problem there ever is but I wouldn't mind trying to help. I had to replace the tranny in my 115 when I got it. The brake bands were completely shot....it was a sad day but I got a new one the next week and all was happy.

The only thing I can tell you that might help is that it is not a vaccume problem. There are no vacume controls on these transmissions. I don't know why it would stop all of the sudden or how it is not shifting (ie...revving really high....or just can't grab on and move forward). There is an adjustment somewhere down there. I know where it is for the shift linkage but have yet to mess with the shift point linkage. I dont' think that will be your problem. I'll see what else I can find out though as I need to do a bit of work on my tranny this week as well

This is the red 115 in Moscow ID right? I looked at that car a few weeks ago. That engine runs nice, but the body is kinda rusty. Nothing a few $$ and some welding can't fix though. You could always put in a new transmission. I'm just a stone's throw away in Pullman. Let me know if you need any help.

Hey Bryan,

My Grandparents live in Moscow. I might be heading up that way this summer. I'll have to let you know. Also depending on what happens with this engine I just pulled there may be an extra tranny in the near future for a 115.
