just a post
the last couple of weeks my blue car, 83 240d with clutch, would not start. first thought was glow plugs. but, i did not pursue. today, again no start even though temps were around 75. decided to change the fuel filters. then noticed the primer pump 'turn thing' was loose. tightened it. and somewhere between the new filters, the fact that i plugged in the block heater and tightening the pump 'thingie', the som***** started with no problem. can only hope it was not the block heater that did the trick. yeah, and i really should check valve adjustment for it has been some time now since i checked last. and do a search to determine glow plug functionality. maybe next week........

Most likely the old type primer pump was letting lots of air into the fuel system when it was unlocked. You should consider upgrading to the new style.

The old or new style is fine, just make sure the car does not have other issues.
