I just had my timing chain replaced on my '85 300D (281K) and I noticed that on the bill for the work that it didn't list any tensioner. I asked my local independent MB shop to replace my timing chain since I had so many miles on the old one. Since they didn't list it on the bill can I assume that they didn't replace the tensioners also? Is this something that they should do automatically when replacing a timing chain? or is i t something that I would have to specifically ask them to do?

The only stupid questions are the ones not asked...

You can hear the chain rattle when the tensioner is worn or broken. As long as the tensioner still functions properly, it is not something you HAVE to renew. These tensioners normally last long.

Then, is it different?

Are the tensioners different in a diesel as opposed to a gasoline? My 500sel had a tensioner rail break and consequently the timing chain jumping bent valves. Is the tensioner rail and tensioner 2 different things? My mechanic said that the tensioner rails in my 500SEL are plastic and need to be replaced at least every 100k miles. Because they never were, they got brittle and broke. That will cost be mucho dinero to fix, thats why I want to make sure same thing doesn't happen in my diesel.

The tensioner rail and the tensioner are two different things. The tensioner rail is placed inside the engine and the tensoiner itself is bolted in from the outside and pushes against the tensioner rail...
