TYC Euros and Lamp Fault Indicator
Just installed euro headlights from TYC on my SDL. They look great and the work great except now the lamp failure indicator on the dash comes on with the headlight high beams and when low beam and fogs are on at the same time. No indication with just fogs or low beam. I suspect the bulbs have too much resistance but I'm not sure how the sensor works. Are these low-quality bulbs? Would better bulbs solve the problem? Anyone had this problem on a euro swap?

I have Euros on the SDL and 420, haven't seen that problem you're speaking of... maybe you simply have a bulb that is out?
|
Why didn't I think of that!! (sound of palm smacking forehead). Actually I checked the bulbs. All lights work fine. Hate to buy new bulbs but I may try that next. Can't see how it could be wiring since all lights work correctly. Do your cars have the TYC lights or another brand?

I am weary of cheapo bulbs, at the mileage our vehicles are at it's smart to replace all of them anyway (and fuses). It's the first thing I do once they are back at the pad.
FWIW - my SDL had a bad third brake light I couldn't figure out for the longest time. |
I have DEPO's with standard H4 bulbs and city lights connected. My lamp out MIL functions normally, only indicating when a bulb has failed. I would have to venture a guess that one of the high beam filaments is failing (a questionable/failing, but still functioning bulb can also trigger the MIL). I would probably start with replacing the H4's.

'90 300E and now '92 300E with Bosch Euros. Yes , light out comes on with brights. There are some posts on a couple of lists about how to electronically correct the problem. There is also the easy solution, not my original idea, but works fine.
A small 1 " piece of electricians tap placed strategically over the dash indicator. Has worked for me for around 6 years now. Steve |
At least yours only comes on with the brights.... Mine is on all the time now. I had to replace a wire for the right side low beam a couple years back -- no voltage to the headlights. May or may not be the lamp out relay (current goes through it) -- swapped in a good one a Han's place, but the lamp stayed on. Now it's on as soon as I step on the brakes in the morning (or put it in revers), and stays on all the time EXCEPT when I have the brights on....

While we're on the replacement of bulbs, I've had good luck with the Silverstar untis in a bunch of vehicles. A nice, white, clean light. |
The bulbs are new and came with the TYC kit. I'll get some new H4s and report back.

Well, I finally got around to replacing those bulbs. The bulbs that came with the TYC kit had the blue tint on them which I think is there to make them look like xenon? Anyway, the new bulbs made no difference. Fault light still comes on with high-beam.
