Problems with '86-'89 MBs
I was looking into getting a 1986-1989 MB diesel sedan.
What are some typical problems that they have and what should I look out for when looking for one? Any input would be appreciated. |

Well are you speaking of the LWB W126 or the W124s?

If you're interested in the W124's, here's a buyer's guide with a lot of assorted things to look for. The information on the engine will also apply to the W126:
http://www.w124performance.com/docs/mb/articles/124.1x3_buying_tips.txt The only diesel imported in 1988/89 were the W201's (190D). At least I think they were... there were no 124 or 126 diesels imported in 88/89. |

My wife has an 87 300D, 6 cylinder diesel. Its a great diesel and I believe they were imported in 87 and 88, then MB stopped making diesels for the US market until 91. The only issue with the 87, 88 300D is the trap ox device. Ours was changed under MB's recall and we have not had any problem with the turbo. If you like the 124 diesels, they are available although not as plentiful as 126 or 123s.
