I Pissed off the cops
Turn signal assembly went haywire giving a really funny but serious problem.
In the daytime you'll turn with the signal on and you get the horn at the same time. At night it becomes more exciting, brights hit the back of cars in front of you and the horn, periodic lights at times. Of coarse my first experience is driving down the road at night and the lights go out, I fiddle the turn signal and getting them to come on with using just the right position of the signal arm. After coming down the freeway with getting an idiot stair from passer byes, I get out to pull the fuse for the horn, of coarse its blown. I either try for home or clip the horn wires . I go for home and at the time I'm on the road a trooper pulls out from the opposite road exit, Freaking great. I pull over to make it known its a car problem and lift the hood, he gets the idea of car issues when he sees I'm not behind the wheel while the possessed car is looking like a Mercedes ambulance. He seems interested but not concerned enough to get involved, gives me a signal to pull out from the shoulder and lets me out in front of oncoming traffic. Ive got 2 possibles for this issue: #1. Is the heater fuse WHICH has melted into the fuse box, giving a melted mess to work out. #2. When the cold snap hit last week I noticed my signal had been real hard to get to its position, then SEEMED to worked fine later that day but with a lot of slack in it. I'm guessing A plastic piece for the turn signal and a new fuse panel replacement. Last edited by whunter; 01-17-2010 at 05:24 PM. Reason: spelling |

If you want a used fuse panel, please let me know. I still remember a light you brought for Coda.

Part Bins? What's that? My wife hates the cardboard boxes I use. I need to do a better job of organization, too.

Sterilite tubs are $4 at Wal-Fart. Great semi-rodent proof and don't rot apart like cardboard.
Plus you can write on them with a magic marker so you might have an idea of what's inside. |

Sounds to me like your turn signal combo switch it broken.
I had one on my 240 the would try to turn headlights off when I tried to turn right. It was turning the normal headlights off and not getting the brights turned on. A bad connection. Also the wiring for the horn goes through that switch as well. So if the switch housing is broken you are likely touching the horn contacts together. The 300D I had the signal detents were broken so they wouldn't stay on. I swapped in a different one that was wired differently and it made the horn come on and stay on any time the key was on. So I put my money on the turn signal combo switch. Replace the burned fuse and the switch and I bet you problems disappear.

The most logical explanation is that the car is possessed.

I agree! Posessed
I'm not sure if the newer style rocker switch emergency flasher switch is the same way, but the older style push button type really object to getting Pepsi spilled on them. Lots of weird light issues till it dried out, but not as serious as what you've described. Honking your horn when no emergency is exists is illegal in this town, and I don't think "My car is posessed" is a valid legal defense.

Why were you pissed?

Combo switches can be tested. Fuse may have blown because it was old. Has it blown again?

Flashing my lights at the car in front of mine gives a suspicion to a cop that you are either pissed off for someone cutting you off or to get them out of your way ,well he was getting the impression I was telling him to scoot his cruiser over so I could pass .You dont usually want to make an exit out of your car when you get pulled over but it made him aware it wasnt a crazed driver he was dealing with but someone with car issues.

Well a good outcome with very little effort got it fixed.2 philips screws hold the assembly on the steering housing ,then you unscrew 2 small wires at the piece .After unplugging the main feed to the switch youll need to unplug the cruise control box ,the whole piece slides out thru the top opening.10 minutes max .$18 piece from the yard.
