OM606 Questions

I have just purchased a 1995 E300D with the M606 engine.

I would be interested in reading more about this engine. I have done searches here and on Google, and can only find references to this being a "good" engine, some specific problem someone is having, or some parts.

Can anyone point me towards a more in-depth discussion of this engine, its development, virtues, why they went away from turbo, etc. Is its block from an older 300 diesel, but with a new head? or is this engine new from the ground up?

Thanks for any help you might be able to give me.

George

The best source I have found for specs and other neat facts has been, the FSM's.

There is some interesting information in the Mercedes Benz E-Class Owner's Bible. Chapter 6 (pages 155-170) discuss diesel engines OM602, OM603 and OM606. Unforntunately the questions you've asked are not addressed in this chapter.

And I just ordered that book from Amazon..... darn it all! It will probably be good to have on hand anyway.

Thanks,
George

Very good write up.
The Mercedes OM606 engine is problematic with developing sunk valves. My E300D developed the "cold start miss" at just 230,000 miles.
Currently in the process of determining whether to repair the sunk valves or purchase a rebuilt head.
Just several years ago I replaced the dreaded and defective biodegrading Mercedes engine wiring harness for nearly $500.00! I have mostly lost any confidence in "quality" Mercedes engineering.

No. It won't be good to have on hand. It will not be helpful in any way.

Do yourself a favor and don't unwrap it. Return it for a refund or exchange it for something you can use, like an Eagels CD or an Outlaws CD.

no such thing as an M606... Now there is an OelMotor606....OM606....;)

If you wish to learn the ways of the 606 then read in the performance section or over at the super turbo diesel site about it because 606 tuners know its ways.

The OM606 block is not the same as the OM603 block. For starters the external portion of the block is smoother and with less gusseting than the 603. The 606 also has a partial windage tray in sump to negate any effects of the spinning lower assembly.

Probably the best source of factory information is the 1995 "Introduction into service" manual that MB issued. It describes the OM606 engine and the changes that were made in the W124 chassis. The manual (note that this is NOT the regular service manual) is 50 pages and the full title is "Model Year 1995 (USA) / Model 124.131." The MB number is S-2609-093. You can occasionally find the "Introduction into service" manual for sale here, on eBay, or books4cars.com.
