E85?

I know one can burn a lot of things in our engines (diesel fuel, kerosene, crankcase oil in emergency, vegetable oil, Jet A), but can one burn E85 ethanol based fuel in the MBz diesels? Do they run well on it? If one can use it, does one have to modify the car to use it most effeciently? Is this a dumb question? What other novel fuels have people used successfully?

I would advise against it. Its more a gasoline substitute. I would think it would cause the engine to run ruff (if at all) because of the heat it takes to ignite it.

Heard of an alcohol based diesel before. It had variable displacement and 50ksi injection pressure. Not typical.

Motor oil is a fun thing to run though. It takes 3 tanks of diesel to make the fuel clear again.

I was refilling the tank of my 85 300D after an engine swap and used a jerry can that I'd previously put used motor oil in. I figured it was "just a little bit," relative to the volume of diesel I was going to put in it. Boy was I wrong! Smoke galore!!! I've now siphoned out most of the contaminated fuel and will replace the strainer in the tank, taking out that last little bit of fuel. Then I'll replace it with clean fuel. I have to do this b/c it needs emission testing. This consists of an "opacity test" and I am afraid it was unlikely to pass. I concluded it had to be the fuel when I ran Diesel Purge (which is mostly diesel fuel) through it and the smoke went away.

I did read however a story in National Geographic of a truck driver in Niger in the Saharan desert who ran out of fuel and was dying of thirst and had a vision while in the final throes of dehydration in which he drained out the crankcase and put it in the fuel tank. He did so and survived, though they did not relate the fate of the truck )

Wouldn't that be...

the E850. I think that would need two engines, one in the front and one in the trunk.
