Fixed my broken Oil Filter Housing
 

My oil filter housing broke a few months ago when I was taking off the oil cooler lines one of my '85 300SD. The threaded boss broke off just as the fitting was about to come off.:furious3:

I have not been able to find a replacement housing. My housing has the oil pressure sensor facing the firewall, not the mechanical capillary tube going off at an angle. The end plates are NOT the same. One has 4 bolts and the other has five and is shaped differently.

I tried finding fitting that would alow me to use the older style housing with sensor in place. The sensor has an M12x1.5 threaded end on it as well as the housing, except that the sensor is too large and hits the housing body and therefore needs a standoff or a right angle adapter. Both ends are not available to make a standoff, but I did find an M12x1.5 right angle adapter. Unfortunatly, there are none in the USA.

A friend stopped by last week and we talked about my dilemma. After some though, he took my old part from me the next day and I got it back last night. He was going to try to weld up the area and retap the threaded boss. He was unsuccessful at his first attempt so instead, milled and tapped a new boss and then welded it in place. It just cost me the $15 he spent to buy the M14x1.5 tap for the fitting.

So last night i bought some gasket material and made a new gasket for the end plate on the housing and got it all together. I also noticed that one of the three fins on a plastic disc was broken off. (before he took the housing from me) My friend also provided me a custom tool he made in order to extract the plug on the housing. I removed the plug and swapped out the plastic part from another housing that was sent to me. (see, I was able to use something...)

I can put it back on the car tonight and maybe finally move the darned thing out of the garage.

It's also the cleanest oil filter housing I've ever seen!

The rest of the engine interior by the AC compressor needs some major de-greasing.

Watch your oil pressuer gage diligently. If something breaks, you will lose oil pressure to the engine quickly.

I just did my oil cooler hoses, and I'm glad I'm scared after not before. I noticed that this could happen. Glad you got it fixxed. Good as new I'm sure the way it looks.

I just has the SAME exact thing happen. Hopefully I can get it welded up locally. Any extra things that I should know?

Are replacement housings not available?

If they are not available new, I always see them at the local pick n pulls. I have one I pulled off. They are a PIA to take off, but Iam an expert now.

I took those plugs out. I used a socket that looks like a screwdriver, think it is for adjusting tierod ends on some vehicles. and used a punch and hammer to loosen up the other one. one is the pressure relief valve, and the other one is oil thermostat. They aren`t in all that tight.
I took it apart to see how one is put together, pictures in a book is one thing, but to take one apart is more visual for me.

Might not break the housing if a back up wrench is used.
