I know a guy who would probably be interested. A ballpark price might bring interest up even more.

Can someone confirm this: The ox. catalyst is just an empty chamber with weirs on them. If you still have the catalytic converter, go to an MB dealer and have them replaced. I havent seen the innards of an oxygen catalyst but Ive seen the old one. If you have the old one, you're better off with a straight pipe.

The TrapOx/OxCat is a honeycomb structure.
The soot is trapped on the walls until the exhaust get hot (around 900*f) and gets burned again. That's why they can "meltdown" if driven lightly for a long time, get plugged, then get really hot after a hard run. There is so much soot bruning that it will melt the innards and can even melt through the case. |

Thats the catalytic converter. What about the oxidation catalyst(replacement). I have the catalytic converter here. I can see that there are ceramic honeycomb pieces inside. Has anyone seen the inside of the oxidation catalyst?

Wanted: your extra trap ox or trap cat
I would be interested in knowing what kind of difference it makes in the way the engine operates. If anyone has an old trap cat to donate to the project, I could look into having a muffler shop weld up a pipe to replace it. If it works out experimentally, more could be made.

NASCAR requires us to run mufflers on our racecars, so we got our muffler and cut the ends off and cut the inside parts out of the muffler, and welded it back together. Muffler installed, with NO back pressure, and still looks totally legal. I am sure we could do the same thing to any trap oxidizer or catalytic converter. Seems to be along the same lines. Any thoughts on this?

trap ox recalled
I know in the 300sdl, MB still removes the trap and replaces the turbo for FREE. This is an ongoing recall. If you have the football, just take it to MB. They may add a catalyst under the car.
If you know about this but it does not apply to your cars, please forget I mentioned it. Also your locall dealer will not tell you and may not even know about it. NOT. Greg |

I don't know that a muffler shop would do it. Where I live this sort of thing is illegal.

I went to a muffler shop and told the clerk at the desk I wanted a bypass pipe and she directed the owner to check my mufflers.
They started the engine and raised the car on a lift while the man went over everything in the exhaust line with a stethoscope, listening for leaks. I pointed to the cat and said I wanted a straight pipe in place if it. They freaked and said its illegal, not even aware the car was a diesel. I said hey! its a diesel! but they hurried me out like I was a bandit. I realize they are afraid of state sting operations where places get caught doing stuff (yes, Sears was caught and fined in Calif) anyhow I laughed it off and continue to use the new cat that MB put in place of the Nasty Trap Oxidizer. I want to avoid ever having the thing plug up like the Cat did and my engine was DOA. Any increase in performance or fuel economy would also be welcome so when I get out of state I will engage this all over again at another shop that is willing to do it. I believe Wolfsburg just had a stright pipe put on his SDL after he determined the Trap was plugged up. It was so bad the car wouldn't run. 87 300 DT No Start BTDT. These traps can choke an engine.
