Thanks,

I am also interested in bypassing it. I would like to hear from anyone that has done it. What kind of mileage/peformance changes did you see?

What is it?

In the picture of Carson's test pipe (first post in this thread), what is the little pipe pointing to the right near the flange at the turbo end? (Not the outlet to EGR, the tiny one above it.) My Trap cat doesn't seem to have one of those and I don't want to built in something I won't need?

Or is it perhaps a mounting stud? The resolution of the photo isn't quite enough to see...

It's a mounting stud so the pipe does not have to support the weight of the turbo.

Swap manifolds and convert it to federal standards. It would be cheaper, faster and more efficient than trying to build a pipe.

I need one of these! whats the price?

Building a test pipe

I have been searching for an "extra" trap catalyst so I can build a "test pipe" without having my car down during the engineering period. I think I have a line on one in Sacramento but so far it has not materialized. It will probably cost about $100, more or less. It would be a lot less expensive if I could weld but alas, I must hire such things done for me.

A set of used manifolds, down pipe and oil tubes would cost less than that.

Maybe in Colorado. In any case, the hard part is the air cleaner assembly. They are almost always missing from the cars in the junkyards.

I got a set of manifolds off a 78 SD from Pick N Pull on a 1/2 off sale
for $44.00. These don`t have the EGR setup, so nothing to plug off
and looks much cleaner.

As far as the air cleaners go, there doesn`t seem to any shotrage of them
from what I have seen.
I have seen some down pipes, but haven`t paid any attention to the
condition. Probably better off buying a new one, or could take the cali
one and have it shortened.

The downpipe is pricey new. Take Forced's advice. I completed this conversion after alot of research. If you are willing to get your hands dirty it would be much cheaper to do the conversion. There are plenty of 300SDs out there that have been abused by idiots and sitting in a junkyard or someone's backyard. I ended up buying a running (kind of) '82 and swapping the following:

intake/exhaust manifold
turbo oil feed tube
turbo (although yours would probably work)
downpipe

In the long run I made money because I parted out the '82 before selling the entire car for what I paid. I kicked around the idea of fabricating a replacement pipe until I found the '82. I used the leftover plumbing from the 2 cars and hooked up a K&N filter and routing the oil scavenging line back into the intake. I remember my '85 SD not having a drain hole in the top of the oil pan. I was worried at first but the car does not smoke and runs very well. EGR was blocked.

On the 85 I converted, I found I also needed to bend the A/C metal line that runs across the front of the engine. It was too close to the either the egr or the exhaust manifold itself. I don't remember which it was but I think which ever it was it had something to do with something there that gets hot.

Exactly my point. A couple of little things here, something that needs to be modified there, and the job that seemed so simple when you started has turned into a project. The '85 is my daily driver; I don't need to turn it into a hangar queen while I run around trying to scavenge parts and hope they'll work.

You guys have the 300D? On my SD it was much simpler. The only thing that needed any type of fabrication was the blocking of the EGR. I just took the $100 tube and cut it up to cap off each end. It really is not a hard job at all.
