last minimium wage increase was way back in 1997. (min wage is 5.15 btw) gas prices in 97 ranged from .75 cents to 1.20's.

fast foward to 06 and gas prices are 2.80-3's and min wage is 5.15.

if we are in such a great economy why is min wage 5.15 still?

yes, i have a college degree btw but i find it funny it has not moved a penny in 9 years , whiile inflation has occured out the butt.

Who will pay for the tanks to be dug?

I have an idea, just take all your money ,invest it in exxon mobile, then watch the money start rolling in. by the end you wont care is diesel is 10 bucks a gal.

At that rate, what if I gave you free fuel? You wouldn't care if diesel was $20 a gal, right? Of course, nothing else will go up in price.

The Lexus is a very large SUV, that gets better mileage then my SDL.

The Corvette has 500hp+.

Both have so many cats that the exhuast emissions are insainly clean.

Both need less oil changes then my SDL.

Hmm so which is better for the environment now? And uses less oil...:D

Maybe I should go and buy a Lexus SUV to save money on fuel!:D

EXPLAIN THIS;

IN THE 1970'S CAR MANUFACTURERS HAD THE TECHNOLOGY TO PRODUCE 30MPG VEHICLES. SO HOW COME THEY DIDN'T DO IT? HOW COME 27MPG IS CONSIDERED GOOD GAS MILEAGE 30 YEARS LATER!???
YOUCAN'T TELL ME THE AUTO MFTGR'S AREN'T IN BED WITH THE OIL COMPANIES.
IF YOU BELIEVE ANYTHING ELSE I HAVE A BRIDGE TO SELL YOU IN BROOKLYN.
AUTO MANUFACTURERS; OIL COMPANIES ; MADISON AVENUE; THEY GOT YOU BY THE SHORT HAIRS.....(see OD thread: bush is he the antiichrist..?)

Hatterasguy 04-23-2006 04:50 PM

Because no one was willing to pay for high mileage cars when fuel was cheap. Their was no demand so why would the a business bother to fill it? For their health?

Fuel mileage has become a bit of an issue lately only because fuel is expensive. If it were still a $1.50 a gallon you can bet no one would care again.

26mpg is considered good mileage because the Z06 Corvette has 505hp. What did a big block vette of the 70's get? 10 on a good day down hill?:D

I don't know why but maybe it wasn't economically feasable. IOW, for some reason or other, it won't sell. Not totally sure.

However, lets say you are right. What would the oil companies have to give the auto makers? I mean, if GM had a car that got 60 mpg, lets say. Wouldn't they have more to gain by selling it to attract buyers? Generally, it is not that they sell one car. It is that they sell the car, parts, service and maybe more cars. Why is GM not offereing a diesel Suburban when there is the Ford Excursion? Why is Ford canning the Excursion, diesel and gas?

Well, if the car gets you 20 more mpg, I'd pay for it provided it didn't cost an arm, leg, kidney and lung. IOW, can you make such a car that if I sold mine to get yours, I will recoupe the increased cost of ownership.

Lets say you are trying to get me to upgrade from a 99 E300 to an 06 E320 CDI. Will I recoupe the increased cost in say 3 years or am I going to be paying out till I die. The cost of producing this 30 mpg car in the 70s might be so high that it won't work out financially.

Not saying I don't believe you. I just want to know what the motive is.

Hatterasguy 04-23-2006 04:58 PM

If any car company could make money selling a 60mpg whatever they would do it. Their stock holders would shoot them if they didn't.

Supposidly Toyota loses money on each hybrid they sell, so is this good business sense?
