and i post this inane item on a tech message board because i am bored and intoxicated. well not really. intoxicated. one vodka gimlet. strong. now the missive. naturally i am older than my son. duhhh. for sake of arguement, say johnny drives a car that is popular with the younger set. hypothetically, if i were to guess, say a ford mustang. popular equates to many of this younger demographic driving same or similiar vehicles. this same demographic is more likely to have or maybe experience an accident. i be a geezer. say, hypothetically i drive a 240d. slow. and 'kids' do not drive these for the most part. insurance on 240d a whole lot less than say something that appeals to younger set. i state the obvious. until you think. would i, after, or without a gimlet, be more likely to have an accident, in say a mustang or the proverbial 240d? you decide. time for another gimlet. that be vodka with onion? hope so...........

lots of factors to consider. i live in the country and would be safe driving anything. in city traffic i would prefer the horsepower and steering control of the mustang. i would probably rather be hit in my mercedes. in the 60's i commuted on the kennedy expressway in chicago in a lotus super7 and was a dangerously small profile but i could get to work faster than anybody. we had vodka gimlets then, even while driving but there were no cellphones, making it a much safer world.

I'm thinking that with the horsepower of a mustang, you are more likely to get into an accident in one of the muscle cars. Too much power, out of control, too much speed.

Gimlet vs. Gibson
 

Not to be pedantic or anything, but Vodka with an onion is a Gibson. A Gimlet is Vodka with lime juice. Usually Rose's

While driving I prefer Gimlets over Gibsons, Its just too hard to deal with those little onions after fourteen or fifteen Gibsons not to mention the difficulty if stabbing them with a tooth pick and steering the car.

personally i prefer a st pauli's girl before taking out one of my oil burners.

but seriously the 240 is a much safer choice when inebriated. the horsepower of a v8 mustang is a double threat: first it is one more thing to control, and second it is a powerful temptation, which we all are less able to resist when having had a gibson, gimlet or st pauli girl.

You will undoubtly get into more trouble with the Mustang and a better chance of getting into an accident. With the Diesel you know you can't out run anybody, so U don't try.

When I was driving my 300SEL 6.3, I passed a Mustang at 125, out ran a GTO at 135, came out about even with a Corvette and ran away from a Shelby . I can't do that with any Diesels I ever had so I never try. Now I'm happy with smooth, reliable and economic transportation.

I find I am less inclined to race with the diesel. Since 95% of the cars on the roads are faster then me I pick my fights carefully. I'll suck the doors off a 240D though.:D

Did race my friends Accord a bit awhile ago, it was intereting. Raced my friends E300D from a stop light, he beat me.

Whats in a Tom Collins? Those are good.

my insurance is 50$ a month for my car a 300DT. of cours its in my moms name im just "borrowing it for the day" if it was in my name for some ungodful reason it jumps to 385 for the state minumum coverage.. so im just going to leave it the way it is for as long as i can .. since it is legal to do that ( that i belive.. at least i have insurance unlike most of the people on the road today) plus.. progressive sucks ass.. i dont get discounts for my grades or anything..

actually the best thing about a 240 is you can race everybody all the way to work every day and cleverly and smugly be assured that they will have no idea how much fun you are having. (or that you are racing them)

Insurance companies are really strange. If I were to replace my '84 300D with a '94 Corvette it would add $15.00 a year to the cost of my policy. Go figure. Maybe it's the dual airbags and abs brakes the 'vette has. I was floored.

"too slowdy diesel" is what my ex-girlfriend used to call the '74 240D I used to have. She was amazed I could drive for a couplt of weeks on a tank of fuel. She was even more amazed that diesel was .40 cents less than regualar. Sigh, those days are long gone. She wasn't too bad either.:D

Folks,

I used to drive a few high hp cars... Mustang 5.0, Lincoln Mark VIII 280 hp...and so on. Those cars are easy to drive fast, just step on the go pedal.
I had a streak of about a year when I accelerated to above 90 every day on the local interstate to pass someone. I purposely decided to go diesel.

With a diesel you have to watch traffic more carefully, plan your moves, anticipate. Now I'm not sure you can anticipate enough in a 240... but any of the turbo models can certainly keep up with traffic over any distance. I'll lose a 1/4 run, but over any 10 miles I'll be faster in traffic by paying attention and planning my moves. It makes it more fun for me.
