where to go with my 240d
I have a 1979 240D, 132k miles. I drive it regularly between MO and GA every 2 weeks. It burns/leaks about 3-4 quarts on the 1000 mile trip. It seems to run pretty well except for climbing hills in Tennesee. Neither my wife nor daughter will drive the car because they say it's dangerously slow and too doggy. I've never had a 240D before but from what I can tell it drives like most 240Ds, slow acceleration but cruises well at 70 mph (on flat land). My question is should I try to fix the oil leak, optimize the engine performance ie. injection timing etc. or should I consider swapping the engine for a five cylinder turbo or non-turbo from a used 300d or sd or a remanufactured one. The body is in excellent shape with almost no rust. Or would I be better off selling it and looking for a 5 cylnder diesel? Any thoughts or words of wisdom?

if you love it fix the oil leak.. word of wisdom.. first degrease the engine extensively.. it will help find the leak. and putting an om617 turbo in it just makes it a misbadged 300D-T. i wouldnt mind a 240D if i didnt have a road that has a speed limit of 65 to get onto without a merge lane.. but ill stick to my 300D-T

Agree with thedon.
Check the front main seal. Thats where mine leaked. I know what you mean about hills. Mine is slow too but for 32 mpg what the heck?? My wagon drives/runs like a gasser. World of difference between the 300 and 240. Cheers, Bill |

4-speed or auto?
If you're looking to sell, let me know. I'm looking for a decent 4-speed 240D. Jim pbs@mohawk.net |

Slow 240d
re you slow car. sometime bad linage will cause the car to not get full fueling.
Check that your linkages for from the fuel petal to the ip are all working and adjusted corectly. IE if you push the pedal to the floor does your link on the ip hit the stop. watch the linkage on the fire wall to see that it does not flex and lose some of the movement that should be transfered to the ip. Re you oil loss, are you dripping or burning or blowing it out the exhaust? check the blowby by loosening the oil fill cap and then letting it sit on the hole. Will it sit there or is it blow off by the preasure ? if blow off you need to diagnose the problem with a compression test and a leak down test. also you can lose a fair amount of oil from bad valve seals which are relatively cheap and easy to replace.
