Throwing in the towel

I going to half to quit......85 300D 178K transmission went out - no second gear....$ 3,000 to rebuild. I just can't justify spending that much money on an old car that my son drives. I am not handy enough nor do I have access to a lift to do the work myself. The car has a pinion seal leak and I think a bad set of front wheel bearings, starting to growl. Damn I hate to take one of these old mercedes to the bone yard. But what are you gonna do ?

Offer it to someone here before sending her to the scrap yard.

If you really want to find a good home for it, do as Adam says. And take a bunch of pictures.

$3K is rediculous. If you can pull the tranny yourself and find a good tranny shop you can save lots of $$$. Its not that hard. I spent $600 on a partial rebuild for the 87 300D I used to have. I got new clutches, bands pistons and seals for that.
I actually watched them tear it down and it didn't take more than ten minutes to see what needed to be replaced. Its a fairly easy tranny to take apart, if you have the right tools.

Yep. I paid $70 for a used tranny I pulled myself, and installed it myself in a weekend.

Just buy a used trans....I got two for 150 each. one with 143 and the other
has 157. If you look you, will find something. Also 3000 is way to high for a
rebuild. The rebuild kit cost 250 and I guess the hourly rate is around 75.
So by my math, he is asking for 37 hours to rebuild a trans
I went to a local trans shop, and they told me it would take 6-8 hours.
So 3000 - 250 = 2750 / 8 hours = 343.75 per hour
Now I know there will be other parts needed, but that will still leave the
hourly rate over 300.
All shops think, if there are three points on the hood they can charge wacko
amounts for repaires. And we all know that our cars are cheeper then most
new cars to fix. So I would not let a trans be the death of another MB.

You stated your son drives the car. Any chance him and a friend can remove and install a used box? the kids are more resourceful than we imagine sometimes plus I see the motavating factor for them to want to try. Good experience for the boys as well. Builds self confidence. Perhaps the old fellow could stay in a supervisory capacity with clean hands. Might try disscussing it with him.

$3000??? Oh man!!! What warrants that much cost? The 722 is a simple unit to rebuild and the converter isn't even a lockup unit so it can just be flushed out. The full rebuild kit, called Banner kits usually, are around $300 tops. Check out Bulkpart.com or transmissionpartsusa.com

I am going to score another trans for my 420 tomorrow with 111K miles, and the new motor... ~$250 out the door. Gives you an idea of the costs for used parts. $99 for the motor, $59 for the trans, plus taxes and cores...

hold the phone

before you get rid of this car
get a second opinion...

you can buy a rebuild tranny on line for 1200 bucks...

i know a master mb mechnic her in lousville ky who will rebuild it for 1800
which i think is expensive...

you can buy used for as little as 150 bucks...

so hold your horses.

3k for a rebuild is too much. I'll bet I know who gave you that figure. Dirty rotten low down crooks are what they are.
You're just fed up. It will pass. If you sell you might regret it.

I know the '85 had a unique transmission, but I think you could probably get a MB rebuilt from the dealer for less.

FWIW - my '85 is a late '84 build and has a normal 722 pan.
