126 evaporator replacement

I will be "helping" a friend replace the evaporator core on his car this week and need a little help before starting. First, this is a 126 euro gasser. Are these similar, identical, completely different, than the diesel versions? Where exactly does the evaporator core reside in the car? I have removed the dash from two of my 123's and my 124 in the past. I replaced the evaporator on my 124 last spring. I have some experience here, but have never worked on a 126. How different can they possibly be?!

Mike

Mike,
I was going to link you to my step-by-step I'm working on Tom beat me to it!

The evap is in the HVAC assembly similar to the 123. The assembly contains the blower, most of the ducting, control flaps and the heater core. You've pulled the dash on a 123...it's not much different, just more pieces..like your 124. Take your time and you'll be ok.

The one thing that's a PITA is the steering column support bracket on the left side of the hump. Make sure you take a picture of it before you pull the damned thing or else it will take you 4 - 5 hours to figure out how it goes back in. It is NOT intuitive and the manual is totally incorrect. Getting to the heater hoses is fun-in-a-pakckage too.

Yes, the gasser is similar to a diesel but, the FSM shows a Euro version with manual controls, not the PBU's that are in the US -spec cars.

At home, I have copies of the FSM procedure in PDF format. PM me your e-mail and I'll send them to you tonight.
