One of the best things to clean up the engine compartment

Replace or put in the hood pad. It it amazing how much better it will look when you raise the hood. I just did mine today;it is simple, cheap, and you can do it in hardly any time at all.

Anyone else agree?

Any significant drop in noise coming from the engine compartment?

I think I payed about $70 for the pad, adhesive was $15. I suppose it's not the cheapest thing (like coating your car in peanut oil... ) but it looks better than sparying "great stuff" on it.

Noise directly above the hood droped, but the noise still goes in other directions (down and off the ground, through the fenders, through the grill)

Has anyone tryed to deaden the sound in these directions?

Agreed nothing like a neat hood pad, I hate popping the hood on old MB's and see a 20 year old hood pad hanging down.

I found my hood pad for $45, it's the waffle patterned one, I used 3M 8090 adhesive, not sure of the price of that though. The only way to deaden the sound in the directions you want is to shut the engine off. But, you can decrease the road noise and engine noise in the interior by using dynamat or Quiet Car.

Talking And I thought you were going to discuss simple green

a new hood liner would need to be SOLID GOLD to significantly improve my engine compartment. while I have greatly reduced the ahem, grime, it is still COVERED with oil and grease residue. once I have finally gotten all the oil and other stuff clean and stopped from leaking I will tackle the hood pad.
Hey, it runs!

Yeah, I still need to do a really thorogh detail of the engine compartment as well.

Has anyone had success polishing the valve cover, or is that a lost cause? I tried an an aluminum polish and a buffing wheel, but that didn' seem to work.

Yep my valve cover polished up pretty well. All it took was about 3 hours on a wheel and various grits of compound.
