300SD windshield replacement

Can anyone tell me if you can get tempered glass for an 82? I have a leak and was going to have the seals replaced and am wondering if I can get tempered glass instead of laminated glass. I think that tempered is cheaper?

Any thoughts?

Their is no seal, the windsheild is bedded in with sealant.

I don't know what new windsheilds cost, I think about $200 for the aftermarket Asian brands to around $500 for a nice OE.

Is your glass really knackered or something? I think it's not necessary to replace the glass if you're only after the "seal". There is no windshield "seal" - there's a butyl tape that sits in the body flange and adheres to the glass. It has a copper wire embedded, which you hook up to some power in order to make the seal nice, warm, and plastic for safe removal of the glass. The butyl tape kit is available from MB or I think some places online should be able to get it.

Also, are you sure it's a windshield seal leak? As I found out, there are large drains by each bottom corner of the windshield that drain into the wheel well, and if they don't make good contact with the body, they will leak water into the front footwells which may then make way to rear footwells.

Just had gasket and windshield replaced at Safelite in Worcester Ma.on my 300CD. I know the SD is different but this are what I paid. Gasket was $143 from Phil here and windshield was $200 with the installation of the new gasket. Safelite was unable to get the gasket. I had to replace windshield because of cracks and dings and general viewing difficulty because it was the original and the car has 297,000 miles.

When the insurance Co did mine the bill was about $700ish I think.

If you have glass coverage they pick it up, really its about the only insurance claim that takes 10 minutes on the phone to put through.

There is no deductable on glass coverage in CT, and they cannot raise your rates.

I've replace my 300D windshield for about $200 at a auto glass chain store. Many of these places will come to you for the same price. Call around and get some quotes.

You do not want a tempered glass windshield, and I seriousely doubt that you can find one. There's a reason that laminated glass is used for this application for all cars, and that reason isn't to extract more money from you.

If you did have a tempered windshield and hit an object with it with enough force to crack the glass, instead of getting a crack as with a laminated glass, you'll get a face-full of glass pebbles and a whole lot of wind. Not a good scenerio.
