Bump, simply because 4x4labs still has on their site that it is in testing mode.

That's why I'm bumping a 3 year old thread.

I've been thinking about doing this in a Cherokee - especially since I already have a spare OM617 turbo. But if I were to do it, I'd use either the stock auto tranny (I have 2) or maybe a 240D 4-speed (I have one of those as well) and a divorced transfer case. Far and away the easiest solution. Might require fabricating a second crossmember for the t-case, and a shorty driveline to connect it to the tranny but still W-A-Y easier than trying to adapt an American tranny to a German engine...

The beauty of putting one into a Cherokee is that
1) the engine bay is already dimensioned for an inline 6, so the inline 5 should fit easily and
2) the Cherokee weighs 3400 lbs - about the same as a W123
3) there are a wide variety of axle ratios readily available, so gearing it to make better use of the available HP and torque should be a cinch, and lastly
4) there are TONS of cheap parts available.

Don't forget the guy who put the 617 in a Jeep FC. He's posted here in the past. Cool truck and camper.

It fits right in! No clearance issues with pan, hood, oil filter housing or down pipe. Like it was meant to be there.

1: Fits very well.
2: Didn't weigh my MJ, but guessed it to be close to a 300CD
3: 4:10 with 31" tires seemed to be the magic combo
4: TONS

Is that in a 4x2 or a 4x4? That DOES look like "it was made for it".

4:10's? What kind of MPG and RPM's at speed?

It looks like even the MB power steering pump was used.

That is awesome!

THAT IS SHWEEEET!

So, what tranny did you use? - 2WD or 4WD? I've gotta' know MORE man, keep the info comin'! And yes, an MJ weighs in pretty close to what the 300CD/300D does - just a tad heavier than a Cherokee.

I was thinking 4.10 with 31"s - though with 3.07, 3.55, 3.73, 4.10, 4.56, and even 5.13 axles available, I was sure something would work.

Arrow My 617 in to a Jeep project

I was going to install a 617 in my Cherokee next Friday, but now I found a Comanche I really want.

I have been looking for years for an adapter, got tired of waiting for 4x4 labs to make one, made my own with clocking for Jeep + Toyota

It depends. My daughter's Eliminator short box supposedly weighs less, due to having just the box on there instead of the rear seats, cab, hatch, etc.

True enough I suppose. I should have qualified that statement. A full-length Comanche with the I-6, automatic, and 4WD weighs just a tad more than a Cherokee, IIRC.

Would have loved to have had one in my 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. A thing of beauty!

So what does it look like from underneath? Was it hard to fit the OM617 lower oil pan in there?
